Iko Iko - my apologies to New Orleans

Well, having been born in N.O. and spending most of my childhood there, I personally don't find this offensive, so no apologies necessary. :D

I've heard this song in about ten million incarnations from the original to death metal, so as long as you give it respect, it's all good. You did a great job. Laissez les bons temps rouler! :drunk:

Whew!

Thanks Greg. Yes, a much-covered number, but hopefully I brought at least something a little different to this one...

Laissez les bons temps rouler! :drunk:

Yes indeed - words to live by :) :drunk: :drunk:

Well I prefer your originals but this was executed perfectly...I think I know the tune, and it kept that loose bouncy feel of the versions Ive heard..maybe even more so

mix was great, drums and bass were cool and nice performance all round...nothing from me :)

Thanks man. Yeah, it is pretty loose...hopefully not too much so. I prefer doing originals but right now the well runneth dry in terms of new material. Just trying to get more familiar with the new percussion sounds. I think it is getting a little better each time. Thanks again! :D

they sound great....you're really getting a handle on them

I really like that roomy snare sound. Fits the song well. No real qualms with the mix.

Awesome. Good to hear. Thanks again.

Good. This was a kind of brush kit sound that seemed to have a new orleans thing goin'...hence this song choice. Thanks for checking it out squibble! :)

Sounds like you're covering the GD version of this song. You've got the right guitar tone.

No nits on the mix, sounds great. Lots going on and everything in its own space.

Cool!!!

Thank you Chili.

Yeah, I've definitely heard them play this tune 100's of times and only heard a few others cover it a few times, so, even though I wasn't going for that sound necessarily, it probably wore off on me...:o :)

I'm really happy that this mix seems to sound ok to most - I think I'm finally starting to get a little more consistant in that area at least.

I think this sounds fantastic.. and definitely not too loose. Great tracking and performances.. puts me in a good mood. Great vox.. and a nice room sound.

Mix is dialed in great... got nothin there.

Did you track any parts together? I'd be surprised to hear you didn't. Great feel/groove.

In my usual no-holds-barred style of reviewing songs (I assume that if you wanted sugar-coated, you'd ask your Mom...)

At first, I thought there was too much "room" in the snare, but it actually balanced out well when the other instruments came in. I might thus suggest that you mix out the ambiance mic until the rest of the band comes in. Otherwise, the mix is just fine.

Not really feelin' the brushes on the snare- as a native Louisianaian and 15-year resident of New Orleans, I just gotta hear the snap, crackle and pop of N.O.-funk snare drums hit with wooden sticks (but perhaps that's just me...) Maybe a picolo snare might do the trick, played with hit sticks? Although I am fine with the languid style and slower tempo you did the song in, to me it lacks energy- it's a little more than just a little too laid-back. Two too many Turbo Dogs, perhaps? Or were you hittin' the herb when you laid down the tracks?

Woe be to me the day I post a song here...

Hey, thanks for checking it out and for the good word. Glad you liked it.

Everything was tracked separately. One of my big challenges has and continues to be getting a cohesive, interactive sound without having others to jam with. Glad it doesn't sound too forced. :)

Glad the mix worked for you mostly. And thanks for taking the time to provide some ideas. I definitely appreciate honest criticism and realize I have a ways to go in many areas, but I think I'm gradually improving, largely thanks to criticism received here...so, thanks. :)

Having said that, I think there is a fair amount of energy present, maybe just a different kind. I like it this way, although I thought more folks would perceive it as you did given the tempo and arrangement.

No idea what a turbo dog is, but as for the herb, that takes place often enough that I really can't say what was being hit and when. Normally though, I reserve that for the mixing stage and track all but the lead guitar sans smoke. Thanks again :).

You've got the drums in a nice space though I could use a bit more kick boom to lock that bottom down. Vocals, backing vox, guitars, all well played, everything sounds good to me.

The only other version of this I can remember is by Bananarama, so no competition there. Nice job

Whoa...Bananarama...yikes!

Thanks Man. I think you may be right on with the kick. I wanted a somewhat loose, jammy kind of thing here, but a bit more of an anchor via the kick drum could be just the ticket. Thanks!
