I 've got the a Powermac G4 dual 1.25gh
Final Cut Pro 4: Soundtrack (which is amazing)

If you had $300 dollars to complete this set-up
what would you get?

HELP!!!!!!!

THINK INEXPENSIVE TOP QUALITY.

think usb

I can't say that you could "complete" the setup for $300 per se...

What do you want to record? How many ins/outs simultaneously? Do you have mics, preamps?

Well I'm just recording my voice for voiceover demos

I've got the computer and recording software

I'm looking for following components to get me where I need to be:

Mic Preamp
Mic (shure SM58)
Possibly an iMic for usb connection
unless I can connect the Preamp directly to the computer

I just new and can't tell the difference in equipment yet

all the Preamps I've looked at (under 100.0) seem to all have generally the same features.

Thanks for the help

Spirit Notepad mixer, 4 very nice pres $99 on ebay.
RNC compressors $179.

That's about as close to quality as you can get for that price.

I assume you have a soundcard that has AD/DA.

Actually I bypass my sound card through the usb, virtually eliminates "computer hum"

Some one today said that I wouldn't need a preamp if I get the iMic
can anyone verify this?

I'm also recording for voice overs demos only.

I just bought a Shure KSM27, and I paid $160 for it. It "retails" for $300.

I'm still contemplating the other issues - in particular the sound card.

Nothing - if I were you, I'd save the money until I got more experience to REALLY KNOW what I need next. Don't buy gear just to have it --- buy when you actually need to fulfill a recording need.

???

Well I've got a lot of computer expierience, much more so than sound expierience.

I have a small logitech digital mic (usb) that sounds surprisingly good.
so if i can just get a few things, like a better mic, iMic and/or preamp that will capture my sound with higher quality, eliminate as much pop and ambient sound as possible I'll be happy. I can make many adjustments in post recording using soundtrack.

I still would like to know if I need a Preamp when using a shure Sm58 to an iMic
Can anyone recommend The Audio buddy over any other preamp in it's cost category?

I gather you've never used a proper microphone before then

so if i can just get a few things, like a better mic, iMic and/or preamp that will capture my sound with higher quality, eliminate as much pop
use a pop screen

and ambient sound
treat your room (room acoustics)

as possible I'll be happy. I can make many adjustments in post recording using soundtrack.
garbage in = garbage out. You can't fix it in the mix.

I'd recommend you to listen to what Blue Bear said. Don't spend any money yet and hang out here for a couple of months to read up on what matters. There are no shortcuts to a good sounding recording

Welcome to the board. :)

I have a friend that uses a Mac and he recorded me for a voice over audition last week using an SM57 and a pop screen. He DOES use a preamp, though I don't know exactly what. I'll ask next time I talk to him. He's a union actor that records/emails mp3 auditions on a weekly basis.

That set up is "good enough for government work" as my exhusband would say, but I wanted something a little more, I guess. I run Windows XP, so I don't know how much help I'll be otherwise.

What market are you located in? Also, try the yahoogroups under voice over.

I'm in New York.

Thanks for the help, I've been getting people saying I'll definitly need a preamp, won't need it, It'd be great to know what differences between using, and not using a preamp your friend expierienced.

How do you like your Shure ksm27?

Have you found the rest of your eqiupment? I am also doing voiceover work and my last piece o acquire is the Mic.

if i was doing voice over work...i think the first thing on my list would be a mic lol definitely a preamp, some kind of equalizer...make it sound as clean and clear as possible

M-Audio Mobile Pre ($149) or Audiosport Duo ($149)--both USB. And the best mic you can buy with the remaining money. 8th street has a Studio Projects B1 package that includes the mic, cable, stand, shockmount, and pop filter for $140.
