If it's not one thing, it's another. Focusrite Saffire pro 40 interface, etc.

what is this?
Let me just preface this by saying that life was much easier with WinXP, Cubase SX3 and my old Tascam FW1084.

I just "upgraded" my computer and it's a windows 7 setup now. (Quite frankly, I'm not even sure if it's 32 or 64 bit or both, this should be a pretty decent gauge on my knowledge of PCs - it's been a while...:() I've done my digging around here and found a link to a page from Sweetwater on how to optimize Win7 for recording - done that. I've got a Focusrite Saffire Pro40 interface that I just got synced up about a week ago (firewire card issues) but now comes the most stupid question in the world... How do I make it the "sound card" for my computer? I've disabled the onboard sound and the saffire shows up in my device manager...but how do I make it work for everything?

Seems like everything is so much of a pain in the arse with this new-fangled setup; I've been trying to get this system going for about 3 weeks now - grey hairs are sprouting.

Any help is appreciated.

Is it not just Control Panel / Sounds and click it to make it default?

Armi is correct. Control Panel>Sound>set your interface as default playback device.

In Cubase or whatever DAW that uses ASIO drivers, select your interface there. Everything will use the same selected interface.

If that don't work, then you have something wonky that we need to address with patience and time. :)

That did the trick, thanks! It's been way too long since I've had to set up a computer, especially with a new interface, etc; I really appreciate the help! :thumbs up:

Piriform - Speccy

Run Speccy and that will tell you in seconds if you have W7 32 or 64 bits and the service pack status.
I would always advise peeps to go for 64 buts if they can since you can then install vastly more memory. Some MOBOs max out at 8G but that is much more than most of us will ever need anyway. The ~3.5G limit for 32 bits is however getting a bit tight these days.

Windows 7 really does not need very much in the way of "audio optimization". Certainly you must turn off Win sounds, those irritating bleeps and bloops and you might want to disable the On Board Soundcard. Do not bother to stop any services (unless Resource Monitor shows something odd that is grabbing a lot of juice!) Wireless modems are best killed but I have internet enabled on all 3 of my W7 machines and it is never a problem. Indeed! I am often recording a radio programme and hacking with yous guys!

I just run Msoft Security Essentials, no problems in at least 3 years.

For "class" kit like the Fire 40 W7 is going to be a pussycat. It is cheap, "generic" USB audio that can be a PITA to set up like mixers and some AIs that did not have proper drivers written for them.

If ONLY W7 would put things where and how "I"(!) want them and not it, it would be near perfek!
BTW read a day ago that Msoft are pulling all W7 discs from shelves?

Dave.

Or OP you could just click on start, right click on computer, properties and it will tell you there. It will tell you in seconds and you don't have to run anything.

I was going yo say that. #beaten

Yeah! But Speccy is Soooooo N.I.C.E!

W7 is annoying, but when I had to do something on my wife's computer running W8, I realized it could be worse! Wonder what atrocities W9 will introduce?

Nine is not happening matey! The next incumbent is Windows 10 (F K Why) and by all accounts that I have heard they, Microsoft might JUST listen to the punters this time and make it more like W7/XP than hated 8.

I am hoping that they are going to be putting out some really cheap introductory offers although I shall have to be dragged kicking and screaming from Seven. All I want, and I would say 99.99% of peeps will agree, is an OS that gives me the internet and runs my recording software.

Btw. I have one XP Pro machine still running. Connected to my printer/scanner and that gets fired up every day and I use it online for a few minutes a day. I run Avast ant-V which is a bloated and interfering PITA but I have had no trouble with malware of any sort so far.

Probably right, I just don't like these "freeware" apps to run on my machine if I can avoid it. Call me paranoid, but in the 20 years on the "net", I have gotten maybe one virus (knock on wood). If they aren't making you pay for it and it didn't come from Sourceforge, I really am reluctant to use it. There has to be a catch somewhere and if I can't see it, I don't trust it.

Well! You're no fun!

Heh! Yes, you have to be careful and only download stuff that people you know have tried before. For instance, if the regulars at Sound on Sound have used an app or if it is listed in say Computer Music mag' as "Great freebees of the week" you can be pretty sure it is ok. Some nice people do this stuff for the craic (like us here?) Reaper and Audacity peeps are not millionares I don't think?

I tend to try stuff on the old Xp PC safe in the knowledge that, A, it is not used for anything mission critical* and 2, I can have the HDD formatted and XP put back in a couple of hours.

Dead safe is if you download stuff from www.ninite.com and you are FAR more likely to get malware from or pretending to be Flash or Java updates!

Another good PC "searcher" is Belarc Advisor This will give you your Windows product code...Handy!

*NOT! That I any longer HAVE any critical missions!

It's 64bit win7, start menu was easy enough. Thanks again for all of the help! It's all starting to come together, bit by bit...maybe one day soon I'll be able to record something! That's the easy part, right? :D

:)

I have had my fill of troubleshooting computers from the old days. As a matter of fact, on the way back machine, that was the main reason I had a computer, to mess with it.

I do agree, if someone is recommending it and have used it, totally different. Also, being a big open source fan, there are people out there doing it because they want to contribute. For those folks, Source Forge is the place I trust the most. They have been around for a long time.

But your points are well taken and understandable.

I've never heard of Speccy before. Always used Belarc Advisor myself. (No added bullsh!t in that)
