If I'm recording in my bedroom, no acoustic treatment, start cheap?

I'm wondering if I should just start with a standalone 8 track and cheap mics or go for a Firebox and more expensive mics.

I don't know if it makes sense to have nicer equipment if that nicer equipment will bring out how not-suited-for-recording my bedroom is. I don't know if I just like lowering expectations, since I seem to think that people expect less sound quality from a standalone or something.

I'm conflicted between not caring because I could just get something lower level for demos plus save money and caring that I could make a high quality recording if I really spent the money and put in the time. It's kind of intimidating to know that some people can get their recordings to sound close to professional level. I'm really focused on creating music and am really used only performing classical music live, so this entire concept of technology being yet another instrument for me to have to master is really new to me.

Classical performance... so what instruments do you intend to record? We'll go from there :)

Just because you don't have acoustic treatment doesn't necessarily mean the room sounds bad, especially if you're going to be putting the mics pretty close to the instruments. I'm recording in a basement with no treatment and the only thing I'd change about my drum sound is the mics I'm using. So basically, I would worry about getting good mics and something to record to first. If nothing else, you can always stick a mattress on the wall or hang some quilts up for some basic treatment.
