......What would be the best VOCAL mic for that amount of dollars?
That was the budget allotted to me for a vocalists mic for church.
I suggested a SM57/58 but would like to know other choices.
Thx.

I would recommend AKG D3700. I own a couple of them and am totally pleased. When I bought my first one, I compared it to the shure mics and the sound was so much more dynamic with the AKG's. They are also cheaper. As a matter of fact, you can get them used at Lentine's music for 87.50http://www.lentines.com/pa/upaused.stm

Well, the 58 is kind of the default standard; however-there has been a discussion on the Live Audio web. (It's for Pro Audio only-no recording questions-or they will THUMP ya big time! Hahaha

Anyway, the general consensus concerning the AKG #D880, is that it's similar to an SM58- and approximately $50-$55 each; so it's a viable, cost effective, alternative to a 58.
having said that, I personally have not tried the Mic myself, so I don't know-but several people bought them and liked them-they said if you roll off a little of the Midrange, it has a more "airy" sound, i.e, a brighter/crisper sound, but in the region above sibilance(SSSSSSSSSSSSSeeessssssss).

I don't think EV makes them anymore, but I wanted to try something different several years ago, so I bought 4 EV N/Dym 157's; It's like a 57/58 but it's brighter, and has MUCH MORE gain before feedback-actually, these are one of my Favorite Vocal mic's; so I would look and see what EV has in this price range.

Look around and see if there is a local PRO Audio Dealer in your Area-not a Music Store.
Pro Audio Dealers will usually be under Sound System Installation in the Phone Book's Yellow Pages.
Tell them that You're the Buyer for the Church-and you wish to purchase a Mic in this price range, and you want to know what alternatives they carry in the same range.

Trust me on this one.
I had a friend turn me onto a Local Pro Audio dealer-and they sold me a set of E.V. Horn drivers AT $10 over COST! just to get my business
I was going to buy the same Drivers from Veneman's Music Emporium at $160 each; BUT I got BOTH locally for a Total of $145!!

These places can sometimes save you a ton of Money-and anytime the Church is going to buy something-take your business to them.
Then you will build a reputation and a rapport with this company-and they will work with you-after all, If they only make Ten Dollars-it's a dollar more than they had-and Churches are where most of these companies make their money.

So, look locally!

But Check out the E.V. N/dym series and see what's in your range.

Try some Audio Technicas too

I used to work for a guitar store, and I got to try out alot of different mics that might fit your needs and budget. Look at some Audio Technica stage vocal mics, and they should be able to show you some that might rival the 58 big time...just check them out, and buy what you thinks sound best...I always say that you should see if the store will let you try them out for a night, and if they won't, tell them you will need to start doing business somewhere else. Also give some of the Sennheiser evelution mics a try. Good luck.

Hmmmm....

I have done live sound professionally for over something like 15 years now. I have tried most everything for vocals.

I will still take a SM-58 over anything else for a general purpose vocal mic. I have found specific applications for some of the EV n/d mics, and have used the Audix OM 5 and 3 with decent results, but the 58 just keeps delivering a easy to control, predictable sound that sounds like what I want from a vocal mic.

Be careful of mics you may try out at music stores at very low volumes. They usually do not offer very good feedback control, and when you finally get the vocal up over the music mix, they tend to sound quite harsh.

There is a good reason why you still see a lot of pro's using 58's. I am a believer! :)

I agree with Sonusman, I've used EV, AKG and Shure mics live and the SM-58 is the road warrior.

Much Thanx to you all! I do own a coupla' 57's and 58's and
considered both the 58 and AKG. I'm gonna buy me the AKG (the cheap 1) and use the church's $100 to buy the 58.
Peace

YO Yo YO:

On today's market, I could get you about 100 yards of class A string and two sterilized cans. Voila! What a good sound!

PS For you, Kelly, I'll toss in the string for free.

I'd look for a couple of good, used SM57s for $50 a piece. :)
