Ideas on interface

I know this is probably a common question, but it can vary from person to person. I'm starting to really get into recording my own music and need advice on getting a good interface to get more serious. Since I have a laptop I'm leaning toward a firewire connection. Something that'll let me record guitar, bass, midi, mic, and a decent drum, so gonna need several inputs for a decent drum recording. Then really don't understand when or if I would need a preamp for certain interfaces or what, but any advice on that would be much appreciated. I'm looking at spending from $500-700. I'd also like it to be something that later I could upgrade with a mixer, monitors and such. Thanks alot for the help and sorry if this is a real newbie question but didn't know whether to put it in that forum or this one.

PC specs:
HP pavilion zv5000
Windows XP
Intell P4 3000Mhz
1 Gb ram

Thanks again
David

Well, not sure what I could suggest given your price range that's also supposed to include monitors. The problem is, you're going to need an audio card with multiple ins (probably 8 inputs) and since you intend to record drums, this means you'll also need to have mic pres on all of the inputs (or at least 4 of them, depending on how you mic the kit). This is going to push the price of the interface alont in the $600+ range.

You could probably pick up something like the Aardvark Q10 second hand for less (I have one, it's got mic pres and guitar DIs and it's great). Unfortunately the company's out of business, so there is pretty much no support.

The closest thing I can think of would be this:

Or, you can purchase a card with maybe 2 inputs and a mixer. But still, that'll not leave you enough for decent monitors.

oh sorry I wanted to say $500-700 for the interface alone, the monitors I was gonna add later, I realized that right after I first posted and edited it

Well then, that makes it easier.

In addition to the above suggestion, there is the MOTU 828MKII Firewire although that one has only 2 mic inputs and for some reason tends to work better with Macs than PCs.

MAudio Firewire 1814 is great but also only has 2 mic pres.

Tascam FW1804 has 4 mic pres.

Thanks for the response I'll check all you suggestions out

I was just searching around, looking at a bunch of things and noticed the PreSonus Firepod, although it says $799 every place that sells it has it between $550 and 650. Wanted to see what you thought about this one looks like it would do everything pretty well
