gimmi your mic!
hey guys --

I just moved to DC, but had to postpone my plans to buy a house and build a permenant studio for a year or so

So I'm stuck with this rented apartment and I can't install acoustic treament. But hey: do you have any idea how I could make a "removable" vocal booth? Something like a wooden frame with acoustical foam or something on the inside, that I could fold together and put in the closet when I don't need it? I have plenty of 55'x55' acoutic foam left ... any ideas?

That's what I built. Make carcasses out of 3/4 ply or MDF. Use 1/4" ply for the back. I used 3" of 3lb Knauf RFSB. Cover with cloth.

sound good. Did you build three carcasses and leave the front open?

I built 4 and hinged them together in pairs. They're 42" wide and 90" tall. The fourth has a slot resonator panel covering 2/3's of it, and a 5-inch deep cavity packed with Knauf rigid fiberglass.

I'd build a vocal booth the "right way", and stand it in the corner of your studio room, and simply not attach it to the walls, or floors, using an insulating material like rubber or carpet underneath so it doesn't resonate to the floor.

This is basically what a whisperroom is all about... its a $3K vocal booth they ship you packed flat.

In leu of that, you could build two, three or four acoustical panels as have been described here in the past, and hinge them together so they fold up nicely to carry to the moving van.

Or, like we all did in college, shove your vocalist into the walk in closet. You can insert hooks in the wall near the ceiling to hang moving blankets. When time to move, unscrew them, fill with toothpaste (assuming its a white wall, and you don't use a colored toothpaste like AIM) and you're landlord will never know.

Porta- V Booth?

There was a guy on here a long time ago, that made a booth out of cardboard.
He even had pictures.

Couldn't decide if the cut out door should swing in or out tho?

It was like 2ft by 2ft by 8ft. frkn makes me laugh still...

Hey, I am planning on using drop ceiling tiles for sound proofing a hinged Hexegon (the one with 5 sides) Plenty of room and removable. Has anyone ever tried ceiling tiles. I want to use them because I already have them. Trying to save $ ya know. and no I know what you all are thinking. My wife wont be pissed off because no im not just going to take them out of the living room. :) Thats only if I need extras...... Just kidding Honey.
