hey whats up..im pretty new to this so i just got some questions. is there any computer recorders i could use to get 6 tracks simulatneous recording? or if i bought a decent sound card, could i hook up my 8 input mixer to it, and record 6 or 8 tracks simultaneously with a program like cakewalk? if anyone has any methods or programs or devices they use and get good results with that many tracks simlutaneously i'd appreciate it.

To answer your question, yup. The idea is to get a multi-input soundcard (like a Delta 1010). This will allow you to record up to 8 regular (and up to 2 digital) tracks at once using a program like Cakewalk (Sonar or Pro Audio) to do this.

You'll find most people here like Delta cards. I use the C-Port (a bit cheaper but harder to work with) and get very good results with it too. There are a bunch on the market. Do a bit of research and see what works best for you, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

so your saying if i bought a delta 10/10, i could put it in my computer, hook my mixer up to it, boot up cakewalk and simultaneously record 8 tracks off the mixer?

That kind of depends on the mixer you have. In order to record 8 SEPARATE and distinct tracks, you need either an 8-bus mixer or at least a mixer that offers insert points or direct outs on each channel. Then your mics could be connected to the mic in's on the mixer, use some special patch cables on the insert points and connect each channel's insert point to the appropriate input on the delta (or other) 8-input card. Set up levels in the mixer so you aren't clipping but do have hot levels, then set the sound card levels in your application software or control applet that comes with the sound card, chase down the 11 reasons why none of this works, fix them, and rock on... If you want an option for the Delta card, look into the MOTU interfaces.....

...or an Aardvark Q10 - it has built-in pre's so you wouldn't have to worry about the mixer at all (a bit more expensive though).
