Im really unsure about the first step to take.. I'd like to get out and play a few gigs and develop a fanbase.

I do live original electronica. I plan on playing a few small gigs inside my garage for friends and stuff to test out the live setup and how i'd like it to go..

after that..

any tips on how to conact a venue? on bringing in a fan base? do i need a press kit for pub type settings?

Thanks.. i'm just jkinda nervous.. Id like to appear well rouned and not look like a nervoous hack.. so thanks in advance!

Put together a Bio and a demo CD for the clubs to go by. Tell everyone you know that you will playing at a certain place and get as many people you can there. Impress the club owner...

"Don't wait for me!"

"Hooper?!"

Shoot!"

wait..

I dont care about being signed..

I want to get out, play a few shows and interact and have fun. But at the same time i'd at least like to keep my dealings professional.

Proteus,
Don't know how long you've been lurking around here, but you'll find these are shark infested waters..........fact is, the water has run red with blood in the past. Keep your arms close to your body and try not to disturb the water too much.
There's already a couple of posts here that will help you......enough to start with anyway.

You guys crack me up!

well..

Im not getting your metaphors.. and the word hassle comes to mind and that can be easily dealt with

Proteus,
Not to worry, if you read some of the other threads in this forum, you'll see what we mean.......it's really nothing.
Just be careful and don't get sucked into anything too quickly. There are a few folks that like to troll these threads for newbies looking for honest advice. Some will offer the advice out of the goodness of their heart, others want to charge money for it. That's really all it boils down to. It has gotten rather comical lately.

Surf's up! Sharks like to come close to shore on days like this. Be careful out there.

Idea:

Buy a spindle of 50-100 of those mini-disc CDs (The ones shaped like business cards?) They hold about 50 meg... enough room for your best song... print your contact info on a lable for the front of the disk... include it with whatever you're using for your promo kit.

It's unique... people remember unique.

... than again you could just show up naked... that would be unique....

(New WebSite - check it out if you get a chance)

... yeah... a website would be a good idea too.. you could print that with your contact info... have more songs there etc...etc...etc...

Here's some real advice, I'm just a newbie but some of this should be common sense.

It would seem you're a dj throwing down some electronic dance jams right? I'm in the older crowd, but don't they call this doing a "rave" or something similar?

Anyway, since it seems you just want some local exposure and get people dancing, this is really easy to do if you ask me.

Start small. Rent your local town hall or similar venue, or even a school gym. Get the idea? Then make flyers and get all your freinds and their friends to show up and just make them dance! should be a piece of cake.

Or do what I've done with bands I have been in, just start jamming sometime in your yard and eventually people are going to come by, and check you out. This is a great way to get instant feedback. Get a block party going and you lay down the jams!!

This kind of music CRIES out for a capable light show. Research how much it will cost to rent some good lights for your shows.

Take pictures from behind your setup facing the audience, these pictures really look cool because it will show yourself waving your hands, the people dancing, etc, this will impress the club owners.

To get into the clubs will be the hardest thing if you ask me. Unless they don't pay anything you'll probably have to hook up with a local booking agent. However don't be shy about just going up to the club owners and show them some promo shots (of your setup with the crowd and the lights!) and ask them what it takes to get a shot at the stage. Tell them you'll do the first show for free and if they like you, the next time around you get paid.

Get a good promo kit ready right now, pictures, sample cd, flyers, website information, business cards, etc. Throw it out there to who ever you can throw it to. Take your time, don't expect miracles overnight and it will happen, IF you stick with it.

Oh yah, contact local schools and see if you can jam at a school dance or function. (pep rally, half time at football games, etc.)

10% music, 90% marketing!!!!!! :)
