I'd like to switch DAW software, but to what?

Hi,

I'm currently using cubaseLE, but I'm feeling limited by the number of sends permitted (4 per project). I would otherwise switch to SE, but oddly enough, SE is not supported by the Frontier Tranzport controller
that I use.

I'd like to stay under $150 ( I can get academic pricing), so what should I do? Sonar4? I need to use Vsts and Vstis, and my projects are typically 10-16 tracks, with up to 8 simultaneously tracked.

Thanks!

JD

Are you positive about the lack of compatibility? Have you been told it isn't, or just not seen evidence that it is compatible?

Give Reaper a try. The demo is fully functional and even after the trial period, I believe it is still fully functional.

Only $40 for a license. Good stuff!

Uhhhh, if something works in LE, it's gonna work in SE (same program, just limited features and LE is lower on the food chain than SE).

But if you really want to change sequencers, you just have to find something you are comfortable with and will work with your preferred workflow. Go to www.hitsquad.com/smm and download the demo packages (that's how I chose between Sonar and Cubase...)

Frontier actually lists every other version of cubase on their website as being compatible. I emailed them just to make sure and waiting to hear back..

Ok--found this on their forum-- it's not supported

hat assumption would be true. The SE version does not have integrated support for external controllers the way that the other versions do. This is a decision that Steinberg made some time ago to differentiate SE from their other versions, and nothing that we have any control over. Sorry.

1) Upgrade Cubase to a higher version;
or
2) Get another controller.

Find a copy of Cubase 3 SL. You should be able to talk the price down now that Cubase 4 is out. All the Sam Ashes and Guitar Centers in my area still have copies of SL for sale alongside the newer Cubase 4 and I'm sure they're eager to get rid of old inventory...

I personally wouldn't recommend Sonar Home Studio 4 since I just switched from that to Cubase SE 3 after 5 years of being a loyal Cakewalk customer.

Cubase is sooo much better.

Thanks (and you too Ford Van). I'll look into it. Sonar is very tempting though because the Tranzport has additional support for it versus the other DAW software.

what support would that be?

From the Frontier website:

Besides TranzPort’s standard features (transport controls, track navigation and controls, marker navigation, loop control, punch-in control, undo, and on and on), SONAR users get some special features. These include metering on the LCD display, control access to every bus, level and pan control of tracks and buses, and fifteen (count 'em … 15!) button combinations that are user-programmable. These special features are a result of the custom control surface plug-in developed by Frontier Design Group just for SONAR users.

That sounds like a good idea. The closest Guitar Ctr. is 80 miles from me, but maybe, I can work something mail order...

Tracktion 2 can do it. And it will work with the Tranzport. It cost about $150 and you can us as many tracks as your cpu can handle. easy to learn too.

Make me a list of features you want to see on the tranzport, where you want them (which buttons and modifiers) that reaper doesnt already do, and I bet you see them sooner or later

actually, scratch that I think it already does those things

Itll take you less than one minute on hi speed to download and install, give it a try...I dont have a tranzport here
