My Ibanez Talman 620 doesn't like to stay in tune. Mostly because I'm a rhythm player and like to rest my hand on the trem. It's not a locking trem- It's just a 3 spring float. I've been wondering if anyone has a trick for converting my existing trem to a permanent bridge without drilling holes, or in anyway hurting it's finish. Has anyone ever tried replacing the springs with a solid bar or anything like that ? My friend drilled bolts in his guitar to keep his trem from moving, but I don't want to do that. What about wedging something between the body and trem? If I can get the trem to hold still, then I'm also going to go for locking tuner keys. Any help or ideas would be cool.

Oh yeah, about a year after I bought my Talman 620, Ibanez came out with the 420. It looked the same but was about $200 less. does anyone know what the difference was?

Thanks-

"Block" the trem....

Place a small block of dense wood/metal/plastic inside the guitar, under the springs, between the tremolo and the body of the guitar. Make sure it is wide enough to keep some tension on the springs. For that matter, block both sides, using shims to get it good and tight. Strive for keeping the bridge level.

i dont know what kind of bridge it is, but u said its a floating one... if it has fine tuners, make sure the wood that u put there doesnt interfere with them. Also make sure that the wood doesnt move the saddles cause it could mess up the intonation (im speaking in reference to floyd rose type bridges if thats any help)... oh one more thing, make sure the tension on the springs is tight enough to stop the tremolo from moving, but dont make it too tight, cause u might damage the wood...

I think blocking is too extream. I'd add 2 more springs and lube the nut, saddles and strings trees (if it has them) with graphite (penciel lead) and vasalean. That way you can still wammy if you want to.

actually you can buy some gadget made for blocking it, haven't tried it but wanted to tell you anyway ;)

Take it to a guitar tech and tell him what you want. If you can spare the $35 it will save you a lot of time and tuning hassles. At least that was my experience with my Ibanez tremelo. Floating tremelos are very difficult to adjust properly if your not very familliar with how everything works on them.

A tech I knew used to install a plastic block in the back of the guitar as shown to turn a floating bridge into a fixed bridge.
