as a self taught musician, i wanted to broaden my horizons by taking jazz guitar lessons. I still cant read music but with the things ive learned in the past couple months ive been writing alot of acoustic, piano and rock songs that i would like to learn how people make money off of writing the songs. Im playing gigs for 200 bucks a night, but is there any other way?

The Craft and Business of Songwriting will explain this information in great detail. I'm sure other songwriting books do an equally good job, this is the only I've personally read though. You may want to google "songwriting royalties" or similar groups of terms. www.musesmuse.com may have something of what you're looking for.

Are you playing originals at these gigs?

Excellent read!

Agreed. I much prefer the business information in there though. I think reading about music business is a must for an aspiring artist. Too easy to get screwed otherwise.

I find books about songwriting to be interesting, but wouldn't necesarily take them as gospel. Then again, you never know what you might find. I never would have thought of slant rhyme if not for that book.
