Taking the slow road
Ok, the CIB - Channel in a box is $2,000. Is there anything anyone here is using that has what I need? My wish list is:

dual would be the best of course while I'm puttin it down...
preamp
phase reverse
parametric eq
w variable bandwith and 2 bands
w high and low pass filters and variable cuts freqs
effects like reverb, delay, maybe some thing else but not too important
w the parameters all editable
compression / limiting
phantom of course, and input for DI'ing
meters
quiet

This would easily replace 4 other individual units of at least $150 each so it would be affordable considering that it does that much. So even on the lowest end of price $600 wouldn't seem outside of the tightest budgets. But the dbx 160x is $500 right there (and that's only a compressor), so it's hard to imagine the quality being high for anything less than $2,000. So that CIB is looking better, but I still can't afford that. I may be hoping for too much but anyway, any ideas?

Nope, I just checked again. I guess I was thinking it was everything.... So I guess I'm really pushing it now ;)

Musicians Friend prices here (www.musiciansfriend.com):

Focusrite Twintrak Pro $599.00
2 x Lexicon MPX-110 $199.99 + $199.99

Not bad quality at this price. You can usually achieve further EQ within software recorders, should hard disk be your usual media. There are other options, but this represents a lot of bang per buck. For $225 extra you can run SP/DIF card from the Focusrite unit. There is a better lexicon MPX-200 and MPX-550 also.

I'm not saying this is ultimately best for your needs - just an option at this stage.

Wait for the new JoeMeek Twin. It has EQ and a photo-compressor, and you can use it with a transformer or without.

For reverb look at Lexicon, Roland, or TC Electronics.

Like a used MPX-500 or MPX-1.

toft atc-2
good pres, good comp, excellent eq
you will need to find effects elsewhere, channel strips do not usually provide and if they did I would be suspect

junplugged, are you just getting started with recording?

Dynamic processors are not effects. And effects are not dynamic processors. Channel strips only offer different sorts of dynamic processors - such as EQ, gate, expander, compressor, de-esser, hi-pass filter...

No "CIB" will contain effects [ none that I can think of, anyway - and certainly not a good one ] - such as reverb, delays, chorus, etc.

Some to check out would be
API 7600 http://www.primalgear.com/apipre009.html
Amek's Channel In a Box http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PurePathCIB/
Focusrite ISA 220 http://www.bayviewproaudio.com/focusrite_isa220.html
TL Audio 5051 Ivory 2 http://www.bayviewproaudio.com/tlaudio_5051.html

I beg to differ... dynamic processors may very well be used as an "effect", especially when keyed/sidechained.

Other than that, I would say the ATC-2 will more than fill the original poster's requirments.

Hmmm...one listen to "Revolver" (or any other Beatles album) and I'm pretty sure I'd consider compression to be an effect as well...(what is the release time setting on "She Said" ya think???)

I've always considered hard limiters to be more of a utility and typical compression to be an effect. Of course there are no rules...nobody ever thought a 2" tape machine could end up an effects box but many digital based studios have them for this very reason now.

(of course machines that went for $45k when they were new are now all over eBay for <$2,000...)

I agree that junplugged won't find a box that has ALL of those features in one though....especially the 'verbs etc. I would steer clear of that TL Audio stuff ...I personally just about vomited when I played with one of those preamps (maybe that one's a "good" one...).

Of course dynamic processors can be used as effects. But they're still dynamic processors - and are generally inserted into the signal chain.

Effects, such as reverb, chorus, delays - are generally not inserted into the signal path. Effects are generally fed with track source through the aux sends and are mixed in with the returns. Sure, you can insert a chorus into the path, but that doesn't make the chorus a dynamic processor

A mic can be a dildo if you stick it up your ass. But it's still a mic.

I was posting to someone who was looking for reverb and delay on a channel strip. Was sort of trying to straighten that out.

OUCH!! Could we use the vinyl pouch for the mic as a pocket pu**y instead? :)

i'd say; forget about all them effects like reverb and chorus untill you have at least one decent preamp,

first make sure you can record it real clean, then start thinking about FX,
the last 6 months i only used the built-in FX of adobe audition, they're not great but not bad either, at least for me... i'm sure i can do great things with some rack units, but i wait wait wait untill i made some more money :)
