Legend in Own Mind
Hey all,

I'm recording a friend's band this weekend. Yesterday we recorded some of the guitar tracks. I've only been at this home recording thing for about six months. Over that time, I haven't had much luck getting a guitar tone on tape that I realy like.

Anyway, I think I've finally recorded a guitar tone I like. This is where I need your help. I need some feedback so I know if I'm on the right track or not. Here's a short clip of some guitar/drums. I'd love to hear what you think of the guitar tone.

The rig is an American Strat into my Budda Superdrive 30w 2x12. The budda is cranked but the distortion is turned down pretty low. I put an MXL-603 on the front of the amp (about 6 inches off the grill, slightly off-axis) and another MXL-603 on the back of the amp (phase reversed). We recorded two guitar tracks, one with neck/middle pick-up configuration, and the second with middle/bridge. The tracks are panned 50-65%.

Please let me know if I'm on the right track!

I wasn't really into the sound untill the drums kicked in. Then it sounded fantastic. My only concern would be how it site with the bass guitar. If the bass guitar is going to be like the other song you have on the site, then I think it will site nicely.

Good job.

Cool. What do you think could make the beginning sound better? Maybe go mono until the drums kick in or something? I'm gonna try that and see how it sounds.

Personally, I'm more of a Les Paul kind of guy, but I think this Strat sounds pretty ballsy. I'm liking that mic behind the cabinet technique... at least for this guitar.

hmmmm......

Not mono in the sense of just center panning both guitars, but maybe mono as in just the left or the right guitar on its own.......? Some reverb during that part?

I would maybe ditch the hi-hat during the intro too. But thats just me.

I was thinking of muting the back of the amp mics for the intro (in mono) and then kicking in everything with the drums.

I agree with the hi-hat, that was just a click track... it will be gone in the final mix.

Thanks for the feedback Outlaws, you've given me some good ideas!
