I'm new here by the way. Hi!

How do I go about recording vocals if I don't use a 4 track?

I don't really -need- a 4-track because I use software to mix everything together and it's a lot easier for me that way. I don't play guitar or anything, so it's a vocal mic I'm looking for. Is there anything that just... records vocals on one track?

Also, I -would- use my computer, but there is a built-in mic, and I've already tried plugging in different mics with all of the possible input options but it just doesn't work. The line-in works (thankfully) and I can put my recorded vocals into a wav file.

What kind of mic should I get (would this be better in the mic forum)? Can I get a good one for $50 (Canadian)? I'm guessing that's around $30 US.

You can't get shit for $50 cdn......! A Shure SM58 will run you about $150......

You will need a mic pre to connect the mic to - then you connect the mic pre to the input of your soundcard on your computer and record onto it.....

Cheapie pres go for around $200 or so... Stuff like the ART or the Midiman AudioBuddy.....

The SM58 is a standard stage vocal mic -- it is a good general purpose microphone....

Some flavour of large-diaphragm condenser would also work for you, but the price is somewhat higher..... something like the AT3035.........

You still need a pre too.........

Is a preamp absolutely nessecary? What'll happen if I use a mic without it?

That's what happens when you dont have a preamp.
