I'm intoxicated righjt now, quite intoxicated. But I wanted to share what I did miking drums today. This was using a Yamaha Birch Custom kit.
I'll start with the most "experimental" part of what I did. I used a Blue Kiwi in bipolar mode about 3-4 ft above the drums - with each side of the capsule getting half of the kit, if you know what I mean. I will later copy and paste this track and reverse the polarity of the copy and then pan them out. Either way, the KIWI sounds awesome as it is overhead style
. BTW, am I crazy doing the whole simulating-stereo-overheads-by-using-bipolar mic-and-copying/pasting/reversing the polarity of copied track-then panning them hard left and right thing?!
Next, I used a U87 as a room mic about 15ft in front of the kit. I then ran it through a Vox Box and compressed it fairly heavily. Definitely adds some "depth".
Then, about 4ft in front of the Kick I placed a Blue Dragonfly pointed at the Kick drum. ATM25 inside the kick pointing at the beater. And then a SM57 on the side of the shell of the kick. the kick sounds real nice.
Snare miked top and bottom with 57's. 10" rack tom - MD421. 13" (i think) - EV RE20 (anyone used one of these on toms before?). 16" floor tom - MD421.
KM84 on Hi Hat. SM81 on ride.
The kit sounds great. They are the best drums sounds I have gotten. They barely need EQ or compression - I did a rough mix of them with bass and a scratch guitar track and they sound better than most of my polished drum mixes.
Just wanted to share my excitiement!
