I took the back of the kick off, is it safe to play without the metal rim?

For mic placement purposes, I took off the back head on the kick drum. Is it safe to leave metal rim off of the kick drum, will it warp? I'm concerned since they're not my drums.

I don't think it will warp. I would maybe be a little concerned about the lugs rattling though. I cut the middle out of an old head, and left maybe three inches all of the way around. I put this on the front and the resonant head lugs don't rattle any more.

If there are toms mounted on the kick-then YES, it can and will warp the kick.

I wouldsuggest that you buy a head, and cut it almost all out-then put that on there, and put some tension on it. That way the front of the Kick will have support.
