...and I think I actually mixed it pretty well, too. Of course, it's up for debate here, so help me out with some constructive criticism. We recorded it 3/8/02, except for the bass which was done earlier tonight using Ed's ART dual MP suggestion. I spent 8 hours mixing this fucker!

song: Ohio Briars

Are you SURE this is the right forum?

I like the kick, hat and snare in the drum mix, but I'd bring the toms up more and the cymbals back a bit (of course I'm listening in headphones, so they may be exagerrated).
Vocal sits well - any reverb/delay? What mic?
Nice U2 interlude leading up to the solo.

Well see, I was torn between the DJ/Hip Hop forum and this one, so I flipped coin:)

The kick sounded great right from the go, but I added a gate from a Yamaha 500 just to beef it up. It's the only way I know how to do that. Toms are low beause I ditched the track they were on, and so now the whole thing relies on the room mic and overheads for toms. Can't bring 'em up without getting crushed by cymbals.

The vocals don't have any verb/delay, just a lot of compression (back vox have plenty of chorus, though). They were done with a 4033.

Thanks for the comments, Chuck!

hi,

just listening to it now.

i think the first thing to do is change that snare drum. toms come out a bit too much here and there, cymbal needs to go down and hi hat come up. a little boost at around 12k for the hi-hats might help.

the guitars sounded very middly, on the right. it sounds like a small amp to me. am i right? if not, try some eq.

other than that, very nice, dont like the song myself, but sounds good.

Good ears, LW - that's about a $50 snare! The amp on the right panned guitar is a Silvertone, which actually sounded fantastic, but I apparently didn't mic it very well. I tried several EQ adjustments, but couldn't seem to get it any better.

thanks for listening - I appreciate the comments

The previous comments nailed what I was thinking about vocals and guitar sound, but there was something about this tune that made me feel like it was happy hour and I should be in bar, hammered...Actually on that last chorus it sounds like the singer was drinking. cool tune..

Bar music:cool:

pretty good job. Nice balance. THe mix in general is a bit bright for my tastes , but so is aerosmith. I want more ambience. It will take this to another level.

funk on!

Really? That's a first. I use yamaha msp5 monitors which have a tendency to exaggerate the highs and leave out the lows, so getting a dull mix is very easy to do.

thanks for listening...

Overall a good effort I think - the mix could do with a little more presence and brightness but overall a decent attempt. :)

I guess that is why there is chocolate VS vanilla....one person thinks the mix is bright...another then posts the mix should be brighter.

I find that the gtrs are very harsh sounding, and the distortion is not as pleasing of an overdriven sound as could be. They sound like a small Marshall valvestate kinda amp, mic'd from too far away. There is a lack of 'oompfh' to them. The vocals are midrangy also. The mix sounds much better on my Sony 7506 headphones, but not nearly as good on my jbl or urei monitors. With the exception of the panned gtrs, the mix takes on a mono feel. When you go into the "transistion part" at 1:25, I think a more organized, musical seque would help. At this point, the two chord change is starting to get a little repetative. The song and mix, TO ME, take on a garage band, demo recording sound, and is not as polished as a studio recording. I think the song is a good one, but needs another section (bridge...whatever) with some different chord changes.

kinda harsh, I dont like the guitar sound and the others mentioned the other problems, but the song is good.

I do like the song.

Great rocker here. The cymbals are a bit bright (I think I just spit out a few fillings:D ) and I want mo' guitar. The harmony vocalist was looking for his note pretty hard and a few times he found it. . All in all, I like this tune a lot (kind of Wall Flower-ish). Just needs a few tweaks.

Thanks for all the comments, guys. I think I'll work on many of your suggestions over the next month or so, adding more guitar, softening the mix, bringing down the cymbals, etc etc...

I'm not going to redo the song, just add some things and remix it. I'll post the results.

Thanks again for the help - that's what this place is for!
