Hey folks, When you read about my problem, you're gonna think I'm the biggest IDIOT in the world....but here goes. A few days ago my virus protection detected a virus that couldn't be cleaned, so our computer guru at work suggested I uninstall all of my programs in order for him to completely clean the system. Well, last night I went to reinstall my Cubase VST 5. I pulled down the trusty Steinberg Blue box the program came in, pulled out the disk and proceeded as normal. Well, next the program asks for my registration number.....you guessed it...not in the box. I tore the house up looking for it but no luck. Then I thought the registration might be printed on the dongle, no luck. Here's the real bonehead mistake. I NEVER REGISTERED MY SOFTWARE WITH STEINBERG. Right now I'm guessing I have a $300+ drink coaster.

Does anyone know how I can get the registration number or bypass it during installation. If not, I'll try to contact Steinberg and do alot of begging. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Well at least he has the dongle! that can happen, I just reloaded my computer and could not find the cover for the CD with the reg number and I paniced, well I remembered that I wrote the number down in the back of the cubase manual :D lucky me...... But my software is registered with steinberg I did that day one.

how long ago did you make the purchase? lots of places will keep recepts of sale for ages (I know this has saved my ass before on warrenty items) and steinberg would be WAY more willing to help you out if you can prove purchase, and have the dongle and files. I'm guessing you're not screwed, unless you just ganked a dongle (I've heard of people doing that as well)

Give me a break !

Hey guys, thanks for the vote of confidence. Not everyone who asks for help on this forum is a CRACKER. I paid ligimate money for my software ($298) and , yes I made the mistake of not registering it. But, I did not see this problem coming. But don't worry, I've got Sonar & Reason which suit my needs just fine. I just got use to using the Cubase and prefer it over the other two. Again, thanks for all your support.

Thanks Wesley

Thanks Wesley, It was a paypal purchase so I can either get receipt info from them or MasterCard. I'll get it and Contact Steinberg. Thanks again.

I for one belief you. Googling for a crack would be far easier than posting on this forum.

I'm not sure about Steinberg, but my school purchased a Konpakt powered orchestral library and had a similar problem. Native Instruments asked for some kind of proof, be it a scan of a reciept or a scan of the CD Rom itself or something like that, and they send a new number.

Hey, I never said you had a cracked program! I just put up an example that this can happen, it almost happened to me, ;)

Problem Solved!!!!!!!

Found my registration card when I went to look for my MasterCard Receipt (Thanks for the idea Wesley!). Problem Solved! As for my "vote of confidence" post from yesterday, that was meant for the viewing pleasure of the first three posters. Carter, Wesley & Halion, thanks for your help, It made me feel better to see that not everyone on this forum is closed-minded. By the way, Halion hit it right on the nose. It would have been far easier to go out looking for a crack to the program rather than posting my problem on this board. I did consider doing that but that would have been hurting all of us that paid good money for the program.

Again to the guys that didn't question my motive, A BIG THANKS!!!

so glad to hear it worked out for ya! lord knows enough musicians get screwed one way or another, so it's good to hear you didn't. I've lost my key for transcribe, a program I used to use extensively for transcribing jazz solos back at berklee, and they were completely cool with sending me a new code, they even kept a backlog of the people who'd already recieved registration numbers.

now the real question is, have you registered your copy yet? :D

Muscians getting screwed? really?? :D  :D LOL

i think people should chill out a tad bit on this forum and give a few people the benefit of the doubt. Here are my suggestions for guidelines of this plan...

1. If they are obviously asking about a crack, let them have it

2. If you don't believe their story, but it might be true, just don't post

3. If you think they are telling the truth, post how to help, or just suggest they call Steinberg (or whoever)

4. Enjoy your life a little more

edit: i also think people should be nicer to noobs on here, but that's for a different thread

double edit: but i do love reading info and intereacting w/ others here, just in case i sounded too negative
