I haven't played guitar in awhile, or recorded anything. I just started learning the acoustic version of Hotel California. Anyway, I recorded this and listened back and eh, I dunno...after listening to a lot of my older recordings I think the truth is starting to sink in...I suck. :(

So I'm posting this clip. I want honest opinions. Note that it is just the one guitar through most of it so it might not sound right without any backing going on, but yeah, this is kind of embarassing.

What I'd really like is some really honest feedback on maybe what to work on as far as playing goes, and your honest opinion on how it sounds.

No feelings will get hurt here, I'm really just trying to improve and I don't think I've gotten any better at all in the last year or so of playing.

Something about the way I play I guess that no matter what it turns out sounding...crappy, or forced. When I listen to other people play, even a lot of beginners, it sounds natural. Not really sure how to explain it...

Anyway, here it is:

:o

Dude, what's wrong with it? I think it sounds great. I can't play like that.

Well>>>>>> hehehe
Why waste your new strings, recording time and Talent on HOTEL CALIFORNIA?
Don't you have anything floating around in that vast universe inside your head
That just might come together and turn some heads.
I Know you DO!
DO It.
:-)

Sounds good, dude. The Eagles suck without Don Felder.

I had sent this recording to a couple of people and they said it sucked. Well, one said it just sounded "rusty" the other was less forgiving with his words... Poor timing, missed notes, "lack of feel and energy", "amateurish"...and I have to agree with him.

I had already thought it wasn't good right after recording it. While recording, it sounds like I'm playing it ok but when I play it back it just sounds "amateurish" for lack of a better term.

I guess maybe if you play this back to back with the original maybe you'll hear what I'm talking about.

Oh, and I'm not "fishing for complements" and I don't have a low self esteem so go blow yourself

Well, the whole reason I wanted to learn guitar in the first place was to learn this song. Never got around to it, tried it a few times but without success.

And my songwriting abilities aren't great...most of them sound the same.

HA
That gives a lot of credit to what inspired this song.
However when you see how easy the chord progresion is.
It seems simple in desending bar chord style.
But ad the assending Chords with it and it creates another dimention.
add the floating chords that don't Asend or desend and walla
Magic
Over dub the double harmony leads

I think I understand your frustration; I've been there. You are good enough to know your limitations. That is difficult, but it is necessary.

You hit some difficult chord changes very cleanly, and generally you have good tone. Those are two big pluses. So take heart; you are far from sucking; you are just on a plateau and the ridge ahead looks steep.

The biggest issue I see is timing. The intro part should be rubato, but it just sounds like you are playing randomly. There is a difference. Then when the chord progression starts, it sounds too clinical.

Believe it or not, I think the solution to both problems is to practice with a metronome until it seems so natural that you can stop thinking about timing, and let yourself and your music breathe a little.

don't worry about it bro. you're just feeling what it's like to be in a rut. it happens to most of us now and then. just keep playing and don't worry about it. it'll pass.

The intro on this piece is not something I've heard before. I'm only the familiar with the part after 1:09, which is the intro you hear on the radio. The intro you played has good melody/timing and is pretty much okay from what I heard.

At 1:37 there's a pause where the playing should have kept going (IMHO). I think you could benefit from you using a click track - that would have probably got you through that pause. Other than the pause, to me it's fine.
If the pause is on some version somewhere then I apologize...I've just never heard it pause like that....

You're playing one of the most recognizable chord progressions (and lead) ever written - up there with Stairway. It's not easy to get the nuances that were on the original. I wonder how many takes/overdubs/edits were used to get that so nice?

You are being critical which is good but I feel from your post overly so. I've heard many other pieces you've played on the clinic and have always respected your abilities. I'm sure everyone else agrees with me....

Play your own stuff and it won't matter if it's right or wrong.....RIGHT?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Thanks for the feedback everyone. That's one of the main things, on the original (and when other people play it), it sounds so fluid and natural, not like they're reciting a guitar tab. I don't know why I have such a hard time putting feeling into it, or making it sound more "lively"...

I never practice to a metronome and I know I should. I play a long to MIDI drums pretty often and it's not a problem staying in time like that, unless there's a lot of dotted notes or time signature changes, and then I get lost real quick.

i think youre using the fat chick approach, Fat chicks often say: "oh im so fat"
and they expect a: "No you're not" kinda reply. i never fall for that trick.
So yes dude, you suck. First of all, quit playing that hippy crap, and learn to play some real music. Motorhead for example. Quit wining and go practice!!

P.s. just for the record, I couldn't get through the first part of that thingy you played, but then I know better and don't even attempt.
