I Sit, remix with real drums.

I've posted this before, but this weekend I did a lot of work on it. First of all, I replaced the programmed drum samples with real drums. I played drums for a duration of about two years almost 17 years ago so I'm still very rusty. This is as good as it gets after two weeks of practice. :)

Also, I replaced my recorded and looped bass line with a "live" track, and rerecorded the vocal line.

Now, it's all "real" instruments and real playing. There's nothing like finally having real drums, although it's infinitely harder to get a halfway decent sound, which I don't think I accomplished very well. The guitar amp is Amplitube, the bass is direct into Reaper. I used a handful of VSTs from http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com and "Glaceverb" (I can't remember where I got it, but I'm sure it's easily found with Google if you're interested.) :D

Now that I have drums, I have 11 more songs to add drums tracks to and I have a CD, maybe. :p
 
Oh yeah, the acoustic part is *not* Amplitube. That's my Martin D16 with both an SM57 and MXL990 on two separate tracks with a little compression. Then I panned one right at about 80% and the other right at about 40%.
 
Nice song and mix, and I dream of being able to play the drums at all -- so I think you did really well :)

I missed out on the Amplitube live stupid buy yesterday - rats.

I tend to want to hear more beefiness from the acoustic, but I'm not sure how I'd approach it. Maybe a slight delay (100 ms?) from the 990 to the 57? Like a track nudge? I'm thinking you'd be safe from phasing problems because of the two different mics.
 
i love the groove of this song. :) the vocals and guitars are well done. there are a couple of rough spots on the drums but it's not bad enough so that it takes away from the groove. well done :)

Cool song, nice job all around. The grove, at times, reminds me a little of an old Robin Trower blues cd I have.
 
Drums sound good, but like all drums recorded after the original rhythm tracks the drums don't always fall in the pocket. They are slightly off sync occasionally. Not enough to point out and say that's bad, but enough to affect the feel of the rhythm. I empathize because I'm still working out those same exact kinks with my earlier recorded songs. Good tune though.
 
Man, you have a got a great tone on your lead. What are you playing there? I don't know if you need to bring the vocal down or not. Sometime I think you do and then later, I think , nah, it's okay. I think there are some parts where the vocal drowns out backing tracks.

Other than that, great song, great mix, drums done well. Yup, I downloaded this one.... :D

Kick drum might need a touch work.. Maybe a little muddy? Just my humble opinion.. Nice drum work for a rusty drummer!
 
as said before the drums just dont sit ....song structure kind of peeters off towards the end...looking for some climax ..but at the point it seems just to repeat ...also the whole mix seems to have been rolled off in the treble so it sounds soft ....

..but that aside its a really good effort ..sounds very pro overall.
 
Catchy tune, I really like the work. The guitar tone is excellent. After the guitar solo, when you start singing "I sit..." and go on from there, it seems a bit anti climactic, when it goes back to a relatively quiet guitar in the right channel, and then just the drums. Something more there to keep the energy of the solo up a bit might help make the end seem less fragmented.

But again, my $0.02 is not nearly worth that of those with more experience/judgement. =P Lots of potential in this song, its groo-vay.

I cheated, I used Amplitube on the electric guitar. Thats my Jeff Beck Custom Shop strat, neck pickup with the "Pink Wall" patch in Amplitube.

I agree with the other posters as well, I need to work on my timing and the end just goes stale and needs something. I'll probably continue the guitar solo until the end. I faded in the first mix, but I like the sorta abrupt ending now.

I think it sounds really good, youre playing all the instruments and singing yourself? I listened to it twice and only noticed one timing thing. I can hear all the parts clearly, the performances are good, and so is the production. Nice song! :)
