id say dumping tracks to a 16 track reel to reel like a tascam msr 16 may be the go this also is something im intrested in as well and id say the quality again would be better then adat but i may be wrong here so if so it would be nice to be corrected here

yes there is the cost of tape issue where adat wins hands down but those adats seem to need constant care and attention with so many with horror stories

but maybe im over worried for nothing and the service issue is just part of what goes with owning an adat so if i can be proven wrong who knows i may have to still go that way yet who knows

Actually Gidge, a friend of mine who has an RME 9652 card uses it for just that - he records to 24 tracks of ADAT and dumps to the PC for editing via Cubase. Its worked pretty well so far apparently. I don't think he's tried recording straight to the PC yet. He has a DA7 board, so he bought the M-Audio Digipatch so he could track to and mix down from either the PC or ADATs, but he thinks the digipatch is broken. :( He's still a bit worried about stability as well - clients won't be too happy if you say your hard drive crashed and you lost a days work. :p
