I need to start off my RACK! Where should I start?

Fine, twist your EQ knobs with you mouse... Indeed, there are nice plug in EQs (see voxengo.com). Or better yet, don't use EQ at all... Be like DeSchwazi and I quote "Get a good recording/listening environment (acoustics), a good monitoring chain, a good selection of mics and preamps and a decent interface."

Now, we're talking about a setup to get yourself started, right? Buy the fucking EQ! EQ is essential to getting the sound you want. Or use the plugs, whatever, but don't let clowns tell you that EQ is not essential. Anyone who says so spends too much time "not recording"! If you want to make shit music that sounds like everybody elses computer tunes, then by all means, pay no attention to EQ. Do some research! Read the books by the pros! Don't always listen to clowns on this board! Play safe!
Read my post again, I'm talking about the need for hardware processors given the quality of plugs available.

You said "OUTBOARD eq is essential" and I disagree with the "outboard" bit.

Of course it's important to have eq at your disposal, no one's said otherwise. But HARDWARE eq is not a priority IMO.

Outboard EQ should be the last thing someone just starting out should be purchasing. If you don't have the ability to twist knobs you'll learn how to place mics. Spend the money on room treatment or preamps before outboard EQ.
My point exactly.

Come to think of it, I'm beyond impressed with the voxengo Overtone GEQ plug... It sounds wonderful, and it's free! I think I like it more than my Rane parametrics. Not sure yet... But hey, it's not a competition...

If I'm out of line, then I apologize!

Not at all, just a simple misunderstanding as far as I'm concerned. :)

Yes the voxengo stuff I've tried is really pretty good, the gliss eq costs $80 but it's well worth the money in my opinion. It's a bit complicated how it works though so I probably wouldn't recommend it to the OP. Probably better off starting with a more traditional eq, I really like the Paris eq which is another freebie:

Sorry to turn this thing into an EQ thread (for a moment), but I just gotta say again how impressed I am with the voxengo... Only because I've been using analog gear/outboard gear "primarily" to record with. I've always been a skeptic when it came to digital plugs... Never heard anything all that great until I tried the voxengo Elephant and GEQ... Really is impressive from my standpoint, which is a %90 analog recording background. I guess my eyes have been opened to the powers of the digits... Nonetheless, my 1/2" ain't going anywhere... :)

I need to start off my RACK! Where should I start?

Start with an A-cup, and then grow into something bigger. I'd suggest stopping at D-Cup though, so you don't have back problems.

I love these solution in search of a problem questions.

Thumbs up on Voxengo pluggies, but they're no fun to put in a rack. :(

Here!

Here's some of the things you might find in a "PRO" rack... CLICK. Just to give you an idea...

Oh dear. Stick to music, mate - you're actually quite good at that!

I got 3 outboard racks and a GF with natural 75DD so I got my setup. :D

im in the same boat mate just starting off. i do have one effects unit. a zoom rfx 1000. it was really cheap and sounds great, in my opinion better than a lot of expensive overrated ones. especially for reverbs. i wouldn't buy a cheap pre-amp, i got a m-audio dmp3 and it was ok for what i needed when i was just recording into the pc but i think most pre-amps in mixers are better.
next i am looking for a compressor. eq i have on my mixer, i dont have compression on it.
i'm looking at a behringer Tube Composer Stereo Valve Compressor T1952, anyone have an opinion on these?
