I wan't to upgrade my studio but i don't really have any money. I'm to young to work and the only way to make some cash is selling cd's. I have a Boss Br-532 and i want to know what can i do to get the best out of it. It's a Digital recorder and want to do rap with it. I have an mxl condensor mic that sounds pretty good to me, but the vocals don't out that good because i live in a busy home on a busy street. some body said i should get a compressor but i don't even know can i hook one up to it. I have alot of people that are anxious to here me on cd and i've alread have had them waiting to long but i don't want to put out some garbage sound quality you know what i mean. somebody, anybody please help me!

the best thing to do is post something you've already done on the Mixing clinic forum and ask for help there...

You might want a dynamic mic.

If you have a lot of noise from in or outside you home, a dynamic mic (with a cardiod or hyper-cardiod pattern.... see the big mic thread) will be much more friendly as far as NOT picking up every little unwanted background noise.

Also better, most of the time, for hand held vocals ......... less handling noise.

Also.... if noise is an issue, try going into a closet to do the vocals. Its a good way to get a little bit of sound isolation.

A compressor may help smooth out levels in your vocals but it may also bring the background noise out more.

Probably the best thing you can spend money on right out of the box is monitors ......... not headphones, but descent monitor speakers.
The best thing you can do for no money, or little money, is to evaluate, arrange and control your recording and monitoring enviornment.

i.e. blankets over the windows or the closet thing..etc..... minimising noise.

As far as not dissapointing your audience, just lay some stuff down.
If you your rhymes are tight and you have a hook the sound quality will be a lot more secondary.
Put up some of the tunes in the clinic and get some constructive criticism and feeedback and then go and make the tunes better if you can.

Lets face it, nobody can really fault you for not making a professional CD with basic entry level equipment. That doesnt mean you cant make good sounding jams on what you have.

I have the Br-532 and I hae done fairly well with it. you can use a compressor with it...There is also one built into the Br-532...if you go XLR in or 1/4" select the effects and scroll till you find the compressor...I use that on my drums.

Excellent suggestion, however, you neglected to mention a good music store he can safely rip one off. The young man wanted help.. not be taunted by elitist studio snobs with tons of money.

Also.... if noise is an issue, try going into a closet to do the vocals. Its a good way to get a little bit of sound isolation.

The closet is one of the most likely places a teen will choose to hang himself due to depression. Given the young man is short on money and pressured to cut a pro-quality release, the closet wouldn't be a good place to send him. I would suggest for him to do the vocals underneath his bed sheets (like where kids read books with flashlights at night). Be sure to tell him not to fart while he's under there otherwise he might fucking die.

He's a Rap star.. not a porno star. Pushing the young man indirectly to have sex for the sole purpose of entertaining his "homies" is horrifying. May god have mercy on your soul.

If you your rhymes are tight and you have a hook the sound quality will be a lot more secondary.

Here the word Hook obviously means "Hooker" or as it's said in the rap genre "HO". The mere thought of suggesting a prostitute as a status symbol and that image is more important than art is nausiating. May Jesus save your sick and twisted mind.

A chunk of bloody red meat thrown into a shark tank would suffer less than the young man in the mp3 clinic. What if someone says something that upsets the young man? He will head directly into your vocal booth and hang himself. You sir are the Jack Kevorkian of audio.

Lets face it, nobody can really fault you for not making a professional CD with basic entry level equipment.

Sure they can. It happens all the time in the Mp3 clinic you snake! The young man suffers because of your evil! Repent!! Repent!! I sense a Bob Katz literary plug coming up soon!

Feedback? Not on your life.

Hum? Yeah it can do that like a MF.

If it's a computer monitor you are talking about. If you mean nearfield monitors... well, get headphones and lock 'em in tight.

Turn the monitors off when you are recording, you couldn't have them playing while you're recording, anyway, 'cause the playback would get picked up while recording. Turn off the mic (or unplug it) when you're listening on your monitors.

I have been in a studio where the monitors being on while the mics were hot caused feedback. Even the headphones could do it, if we took them off our heads while the mic was hot, and that was in a vocal isolation booth. He was a novice recordist with a really nice studio and equipment, so he may have had a setup problem, maybe this shouldn't happen. We don't have a problem with our dynamic mics being hot while we listen over our monitors; no feedback. But with a sensitive condensor (what there was in this vocal booth), might be a different matter (guess we're gonna find out pretty soon, 'cause vtgreen81 is shopping right now).

Mr. Fly, you shure can..............

throw a monkey into a budding sadists grinder.

Of course he will be mercilessly beat down in the clinic.

It helps weed out the weak.

Besides........... scars (mental and otherwise) are COOL.
They show CHARACTER.

Especially gunshot scars in the rap world.

But hell..... SHARK BITE scars carry weight with anybody in the biz.

And dude really, I tell my girlfriend(s) this all the time.
If you cant hang out under the covers after a little fart, I mean if its really that bad, then someone has to change their diet..... or in the case of my girlfriend(s), thier attitude.

BTW.... if Jesus really did save all the sick and twisted minds of the world.... where do you think he would keep them.
You think he might have a Super-Guggenheim of all the sick minds.
That would be sweet.
And since he's Jesus, he could rig up some kind of VR interactive link with all the minds...... maybe put them alphabetically in a catalog to choose from...... and then the masocists could occupy themselves for hours on end.
