i need some help with aardvark products

Hey, i'm really into recording my music, and i usually go to studios, but i think it's time for me to try to do it myself. Basically, i have a comuter totally cleaned out and ready for recording, its old, like 200 mhz, with 8 gigs of space, but hopefully itll work with it. Anyway, im pretty sure all i need is one of these products to start recording, so i was wondering if any of these are any good, and if so, which one? I know i need lots of mics too, but i think that's everything. And will the recordng quality be good? fINALLY, is there a big difference between the products? Thanks, please help me. Bye.

I must first ask you some questions...

What do you intend to record?

Just you?
A 5 piece rock band with full drum kit?

Do you have any mics or outboard gear?

A 200 MHz processor is pretty slow by today's standards, but it is not impossible to use. Do you know what the rate of the motherboard and hard drive are? DMA, UDMA? ATA33? ATA66?

Do you know the rotational speed of the drive 5400rpm?

What is the motherboard's chipset? (Some chipsets are incompatible with some Audio cards...)

check the specs on those cards...200mhz doesnt meet the minimum requirements listed...that doesnt mean it wont work, but i wouldnt expect much.....

well, im not really sure about most of those specs on the comp, but im getting a new computer also (like 2 ghz, 80 gigs, p4, its gonna be pretty nice, it should be able to handle it i think).

as for mics, i didnt buy any recording mics yet, not really sure which ones to get.

its a four piece rock band, distortied and clean guitars, bass, drums, and vocals.

but are any of those things good that im gonna buy? and is that everything i need to record?

Are the Aardvark cards good? You bet. Is that everything you need to record? I think you better hang out on this forum for a couple of weeks and get a little better feel for the whole recording picture before you sink any money into something that will not suit your needs.

Blinddingo's got some good advice there...

But to answer your question, to record a full rock band, the DirectPro and the other 4 channel cards will be quite limiting. If you move up to one of the 8 channel cards (Like the Q10) then you'll have enough for this hypothetical setup:

1. clean guitar - (acoustic with a pickup can go direct in..)
2. distorted guitar - get a Shure SM57 to mic the cabinet
3. bass guitar - could go direct in, or use another SM57 or a beta52
drums:
4. & 5. overheads - a pair of Behringer ECM 8000's
6. kick drum - Shure Beta 52 or AT Pro 25 or ATM-25
7. snare - Shure SM57
8. Rough vocal track to use as a guide track - Shure SM58

Then overdub leads, backup vocals etc.

You'll probably wanna pick up one of the latest chinese (where's C7sus) large capsule condenser mics for vocal tracks.

You'll definitely need the new computer to pull off that trick, though...
