i need help!

i'm new at midi so bear with me cuz this is probably something simple...

today i bought an m-audio Midisport Uno.

i'm using Nuendo as my software

i have my synth plugged into the midisport as follows:

keyboard in to midisport out
keyboard out to midisport in

the midisport is plugged into my USB port

anyways after i've connected everything as stated above, i'm not getting any signals or anything to show that everything is working. on the midisport, no lights indicate that the midi in and outs are being used. in nuendo i'm getting nothing that i can hear through my speakers. i've tried using vst plugins and i still hear nothing. before i used to be able to click on the piano in m,y vst plugins and i could hear sounds but now when i try to play them i hear nothing either by playing it on the synth or by clicking.

is there something i need to do in order to configure my computer to recognize that everything is connected and to make it all work?

i installed the software that came with it so i'm assuming the drivers were part of it. however when i was reading the instructions it said that if the drivers were installed properly i would have to set my programs up to recognize UNO A and UNO B as my midi in and outs. i never was given this option in my program. the closest i had was USB in and USB out. is there much of a difference?
