Hey VS users,
I'm also a new VS-2000 owner, and I also upgraded from the BR-1600. I agree it is harder to use, and I miss my 1600. BUT, I am confident that once I'm over the learning curve I'll be happier. Here's why:
(1) The VS-2000 can run
VS8F2, and VS8F3 effects and really great sounding third-party plug ins (I've already got the TC Electronics Reverb and the LA2A/1176 compressor bundle); the BR-1600 can't. Definitely get the VS8F3 card. It has all the presets of the BR-1600's mastering tool kit, but they sound twice as good.
(2) The VS-2000 can record at 24 bit; the BR-1600 can't
(3) The VS-2000 has better sounding preamps (Though I use outboard preamps).
Here are a few tips:
(1) Get the Turbo-Start video. It definitely gives you enough info to start tracking.
(2) Call Roland and call them often. But focus when you make the call (i.e. just ask one or two questions and write down the answers; ask a couple of questions each time; this way you learn slowly; the number is 323-890-3741)
(3) You don't have to use EZ-Routing to mix. You can mix in the mastering room and then transfer your mix to a stereo pair (track 15/16 or 17/18) via track exchange. You can then go back to the mastering room and master your mix.
Anyway, like I said, I'm new to the machine and learning too. The first few weeks I was so frustrated I was gonna trade/sell my machine and buy a new BR-1600. I really wish this machine were as easy to use as the BR-1600. I especially miss the BR-1600's larger LCD display and simpler menus. Maybe getting a video monitor would help. Do either of you use the VS-2000 with a monitor?
