Hi,
I have a fostex vf 80 recorder, I want to be able to run my recorded tracks from the recorder into the computer into Cakewalk music creator or sound forge 6.0. for editing or mastering. I have a dell computer 18gb space I need to know if this possible or what do I need to make this happen. Thanks

Do you want to transfer the seperate tracks of a particular song in to the computer?

Or....

Do you want to transfer the completed two (2) track song to the computer?

Since Fostex is as flexible with speaking to Adat format unlike any other name in industry.

There are even jokes that Fostex read better Adat then boss Alesis himself :)

Clean and most simple way would be to buy any card that has ADAT I/O and you are on your way to speak for editing in both ways.

Then again, since Fostex has brilliant implementation in all his Multi track machines to be able to export sound in Wav, if on budget,…you could send sound by sound via normal digital output to PC/Mac.

Or, you could for best purist way, purchase something very clean and capable with 8 analog I/O.

I would go for E-mu 1820 or 1820m,…enough analog inputs, exactly enough digital I/O Go to any better store and choose the right card for the task.

However, this size of drive you mentioned, does provide a doubt whether it would be capable for the task (unless you have 10.000rpm SCSI 18GB drive)

Not so much the size I’m concerned about, but about the speed and interface (ATA33?) of your drive.

Until you buy a new interface, you can do this.......

Buy a cable that is mono left AND right 1/4" male to STEREO 1/8" male.

Post script: If you want to track the seperate song pieces to the computer you will need to purchase a MIDI interface.

So that the two machines can communicate.

OK, all you have to do is purchase the proper cable and adapters. Connect the Fostex to the computer. Press record in Sound Forge. Press play on the Fostex. Once you have completed the recording, truncate the "dead air space" from the beginning and the end of the song in SF.

A MIDI port won't enable you to transfer audio, you realize...

You're correct, AlChuck.

I should have mentioned that in my previous post.

Since, raywon just wants to send the completed two track song to the computer. raywon only needs to send the completed song to the computer.

So, as AlCuck has already stated, there is no need to connect the two machines via midi (as MASTER & SLAVE).

raywon, that is why I asked the question of how and what you wanted to transfer.

Your Fostex has a mono left and mono right 1/4" female OUT. I am assuming that your computer has stereo 1/8" female IN. You'll need to purchase a cable that has receptacles [sp?] on both ends.

raywon, if you want to know about how/why the midi can/is used (for transfer), then post us back in this thread.

Peace...
