I have an electric and acoustic guitar, both which can hook up to an amp that has a line-out. I have a line in on my computer.

I'd like to make an english project of mine in an audio format (Poem recitations atop original guitar tracks I made).

I've never done multi-track recording on a computer before, but I downloaded N-Track Studio and will probably buy the full version (is this a good idea).

Also, what equipment do I need? This doesn't need to be all out, just enough to get clarity in sound and some multiple tracks (guitar, vocals) mixed into one MP3 file for burning onto a CD.

I was thinking of the following: Shure SM57 mic with an XLR to 1/4th cable, then get the 1/4th to 1/8th converter so it and my guitar amp can be plugged right into the computer's line in.

Should this work? Will the signal from the guitars be overpowering and distort through the speakers? Should the guitars be micced? Is N-Track Studio good? I'm not into software stealing/piracy, and I'm not going to buy 500 dollars worth of cool edit... Am I totally missing the target here and in way over my head? Is there no hope? Is there hope?

I've never done this before, and need help. Thanks

Without going ALL OUT as you stated, I see no problem with your concept and mic choice. It shall work. N-Track is descent enough to do what your anticipating. You will have mixer levels within N-track as well as your windows mixer, so level adjustment is something you will have to practice and tweak the two- to get a descent recording from a PC standard soundcard.
