I have been recording on a regular cassette tape with a tape recorder,, the quality isnt too good.. i would go to a recording studio but that would cost me a fortune..
i wanted to know what software i would need , and everything i could use to record songs on my computer or something to put my music on a cd.. so i need directions from recording music, getting mixes of music that i can sing to, such as a synthesizer, and what not.. i need to know how to make it sound professionally when i record it to my computer and then i can burn a cd of myself that sounds professional.. please tell me everything i need.. thanx a lot

Welcome, Next,
Why dont you start with telling us what equipment you have now, and what kind of computer stuff you own ( RAM, CPU, etc,).

There are too many options available without being specific, so tell us more, and best of luck.

How old are you?

How old are you?

Not trying to sound mean or condesending. I mean most everyone here knows that I myself was a fumbling idiot not long ago. But I mean come on...

From a tape deck (Jam-Box) to a PC Centered Digital Workstation???

I mean, there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrng with setting one's expactations high... but how much money do you have to spend on this project?

I recently bought:

- New PC w/
Pent III 933MHz, 128 MB SD-RAM, 40 GB HDD
- MIDI-Interface (Midiman 2x2)
- Roland JV 1010 Sound Module
- MK-149 MIDI-Keyboard controller
- Delta 66 24 bit 96 KHz Sound Card
- Delta Omni Pre-amp, monitor, Audio Interface break Out box
- Logic Audio Platinum v. 4.7 Audio/Midi-sequencing software

And a load of cabels and accessories along the way. Not to mention instruments and mics.

So it is easy to spend in the $7,000 range and STILL not be 100% satisfied.

Basically you need to ask yourself a few questions first...

1. How serious are you compared to how financially stable you are.

2. What is your idea of "professional quality"? Old Sex Pistols Demos, or Nine Inch Nails newest CD?

3. What do you ALREADY have that can help you make the transition into PC digital audio? Pent II, or Commador?

4. Are you "going in on it together" with a band of group? If so... well DON'T... but if you are anyway, then be prepared to have a lot of debts with no one opening their wallet like they promosed.

I am still relatively new to it all, but I can gladley e-mail you a list of possible products to get in order to get a pretty damn pro sounding recording. For example, I bought Logic Audio Platinum, and you could go A LOT cheaper depending on what you need. I needed the power. But maybe you need to shift that power into other areas, such as a kick drum mic, or a good vocal mic.

Anyway hang around on this BBS and post some stuff int he newbies forum and band together with some of the not so new "newbies" and I will look for you on Mtv in a few years.

Take it easy,

Mike

oh boy

Well, that's a pretty general question you ask. I'd say read around this bbs for a while and you'll pick up a lot of good info, but ultimately you have to make some big decisions and decide where to put your money, how much money you're willing to spend, and what you plan to do with the finished product. Good luck, there are no easy answers to what you ask.
