I need help picking out a preamp

I have 400 bucks, I know, not all that much if I wanted an increadible preamp, but enough to get a decent sound out of for a humble home recordist, right?

I want it to have 2 channels, like most seem to have. I use an analog set-up, don't know if that matters.

So what's your opinion, what's a good choose? I've heard the tampa is great for it's price......Any advice would be great, thanks!
 
You're right...the Tampa truely is a great pre for the price. But, it doesn't have two channels. You should definitely look into the FMR RNP. I think it's a little more than $400, but it's definitely well worth it and I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed. You won't get many two-channel options of this caliber in this price range.
 
hmm, I've heard fmr makes great stuff, I've heard the rnc is a great compressor.

So what about single channeled ones, what would be a good choice if I wanted one?
 
save your pennies and get an RNP by FMR . you won't regret it.
 
In that range, the Tampa or the ART Pro Channel may be another option for you.

D&R makes a nice little 2 channel preamp for about $500. If however you are lookin for a preamp to really chnge your sound, the D&R is not the one for you:)
 
And of course there is always the m-audio dmp3. It has a pretty clean sound for 150 bucks for two channels. Its not quite as good as the tampa and it doesn't come with an eq or compressor. You could use the rest or the money to buy a FMR RNC for less than $200. In my opinion they make a great combo for less than $400. But be careful with the DMP3 because it is very honest, so if you want coloring use software means or look elsewhere.
