I need help!! Can I use a Fostex adat with my Fd-8?

Similar to a previous post... but not! I have a Fostex FD-8 which can only record 2 inputs at the same time(works in stereo). I require 6 minimum for live band recording. I read somewhere that you can expand the tracks you can record simultaneously with a analog/ADAT converter. Basically I am close to buying on ebay(4 hours left) and would like to know how this would work with my recorder because the inputs on the converter are RCA, do I need pre-amps for mic use into this?? Can I run all mics into the recorder and use the onboard storage etc by using the optical in/out? Ultimately I need to record 7 instruments/mics at the same time. Any help would be very appreciated! Ben
 
The Fostex ADAT Converter

if it's the one I remember, the RCA connectors would interface to a mixer that drives line level at -10dbV on RCA connectors,... which is typical for 80's vintage Fostex and Tascam mixers.
 
Ah, I thought there was a way of using the mixer on the Fostex along with the onboard recording facility or having the pc on the recording end.. all of these with optical. Ben

I think the RCA/analog-ADAT converter I'm thinking of is the VC-8.

The Fostex FD-8 can record 2-tracks/simul to it's internal hard drive (or SCSI connected external drive) using it's onboard 8x2 mixer, or can record 8-tracks/simul using the ADAT optical I/O expansion connector, with additional ADAT outboard converter.

The onboard ADAT I/O can also be used to dump 8-tracks simultaneously to the 'puter, given that you have ADAT I/O onboard the computer,... but I'm not sure if it can be used in real-time for this function. It's worth a try, or maybe another FD-8 user can chime in.

BTW, Fostex USA has the FD-8 manual online for download, which would be a good resource to consult.
