I am allowed to spend roughly up to $1500, give or take adding a hundred or so in the next week or two. Here is the current gear I own:

Fostex MR8
iMac Computer
Cubase SL
Moog Synthesizer
Baby Grand Baldwin Piano
Roland DR. BOSS SP-303 Sampler
Baby Bottle BLUE Microphone
Stereo Monitors made in Great Britain

Many of you may suggest I get some moe of the basic gear, but you have to keep in mind I record local bands with a close friend of mine in their basement. He owns a mixing board, a lot of less expensive mic's, Drums, cheap keyboard, and the like. So it is not as if I need any of the basic things for myself right now, because at this point I do not believe that to be a smart move.

I have thought about possibly getting an iBook so that I could use that to record everything with, and then store all the larger music files on my iMac. Also, if I got that I would most likely get some more software, which is also a mystery in what type of software I'd get at this point.

I could also always get a KORG Triton as well.

Maybe another nice microphone?

Basically, what I meant by what I need is it has to be of high-class, and of that I mean good quality, because in essence I'd most likely be getting only one piece or pair for that price. Any suggestions would be extremely helpful.

Thanks,
Chris

I mean, would my idea of using the laptop be beneficial? Pros? Cons?

Anybody?

I would sit down and systematically, logically decide what you need most. The laptop would provide convenience and portability at a significant expense, but is that what you need most? Only you can make that call.

If you feel that you have everything that you need, decide what the weakest links in your recording/mixing chain are. Is your friend's PA a worthy console? If you're running that Baby Bottle into a cheap-o Peavy working man's board, you'll notice a world of difference with a better mixer or a quality preamp (I'm not familiar with the MR-8's built-in pre's if you're using them instead).

Are your friends "cheaper" mics worth sticking in front of a cab?

There are a zillion answers to your question ...one most of us have struggled with ourselves at one time or another. Unfortunately, it's something you'll have to decide for yourself. Try to tame the impulses and make logical decisions (do ya really need that Triton, or is it just the jones of the week?)

Best o' luck either way

Sean

You are going to need more tracks to record bands. Invest in a good 16 track digital standalone recorder. Spend what's left on some mics and cables.
