I am in need of a new mic, but i dont know which one to buy. I currently have a samson CO1U USB studio condenser, but i am really unhappy with the quality, and the software i am using, which is sonar LE. I don't want another USB, but i was unsure what a non USB mic would plug into.
I want something for live vocals and for studio vocals, good quality and i want to be able to put on head phones and hear what i am singing, rather that put on a reverb to hear how it sounds whilst singing.
So good mics and recording software?

As a general rule, your first quest should be for a good recording interface. Either Firewire or USB. (Everyone has a different opinion on this, I use a PCI card, I am sure you have USB, check to see if you have Firewire). The interface will cost you starting around $150 (plus/minus). Start there, then look for you mic. Sonar is a decent software and once you have the interface, there are various options to monitor.

To help you get started on interfaces, Presonus, Focusrite, M-Audio, there are others and I couldn't say which is best. They are all pretty good. Maybe someone else here knows more about that.

Hope that helps.

Guess if you want to go with an interface you'll have to determine how many tracks you wish to record at one time.
You should down load Reaper HERE as your DAW.
And as far as a microphone goes ..... gosh there are so many to choose from!
Start out with say a Shure SM58 then move on from there until you have one of each microphone in the world.
