i have an md8 8 track digital recorder and the mic i use is a radio shack mic. i know there s got to be a mic that s much better in sound than this. i get clear sound,,but i want more "character" in my sound. im lookin at marshall mics on ebay . they are the condenser square lookin studio mics. i can get one for about 150 .00 any ideas or coments? and i was also lookin at effects processors for voice effects. any ideas? mainly for delay and any other effect that i may need. thanx

Please Do Yourself A Favor

And buy the Rode NT-1 for $180US @ http://www.8thstreet.com instead of the MXL 2001. You can find plenty of comments by doing search. Although, you might look into the MXL V67 for $200US @ http://www.marsmusic.com But if you buy it, take it down to your local dealer who carries Rode to compare to the NT-1. If you like the NT-1 better, buy that one there and return the V67.

Of course, I really recommend you wait till you can afford something like an Audio Technica AT4033 for $300US @ 8th Street; but if you can't afford it or hold-out longer...

what will the sound differences be like?? as compared to the radio shack mic. will it be drastic? (any of the above mics i mean)
by the way. fast response!!! what will the marshall sound like? i am currently lookin on the sites you mentioned and still concidering different mics. i really appreciate all the feedback! thanx

is the marshall mic a bad mic? i see the mic you suggested,,,,the nt 1 and im strongly considering it,,,,but for $$$ purposes,, i must ask more questions. Is there a problem with the marshall mic?. I respect your opinion,,, im just askin. like i said,,,,,,,,,,, i own a radio shack mic,,,,so you can understand all the questions.....(i hope!)

ANYTHING IS BETTER THAN RADIOSHACK!!! radioshack mics do have their place for getting origional or unique sounds, but it seems like you want a mic that is guaranteed to sound decent in almost every application. An AKG C1000 or a Rode NT1 would be a good choice. They are both in your price range and they sound good in many situations. They are condenser mics, meaning that they need a source of DC power for them to operate. (both of these mics can run on phantom power or 9 volt batteries) Personally I would choose either of these mics over the Marshall because they have better track records and I have more experience with them. But hang on to the radioshack mic because you never know when it might come in handy.

what would the sound difference actally be ? from a radio shack mic to a nicer mic? like the nt 1. what would the sound be like? more mids? or what?

Radio shack mics are terrible. You know the buzz in your ears after going to a loud consert and how everything seems distorted and wrong. That is a radio shack mic sound. You know right after you wake up and put in your favorite cd? It sounds nice and clear and clean (Unless you're hung over). That is the nt-1 in comparison.

Get the NT1 or better. Its not what the mics sounds like, but what type of sound it can accurately conduct to your tape or disk. The NT1 will be clearer and cleaner. It also lets you make use of XLR cables to connect to preamps and compressors. I don't buy much of anything in Radio Shack. The only thing I but consistenly, are 1/4" connectors and splitters.

hey,

I know that it is always better to have a better mic, and if you can go for a condenser then do it, but I have a friend who did a rap record with a shure( most likely an sm58) and it sounded clear and also got some radio airtime.

Of course, my 800 dollar mic sounds better, but for rap I don't think it is worth it spending a bunch of money on the mic.

Basically, any decent mic (sm58 or better) will do.

I use the mxl 2001, for all my vocals in my hip-hop studio and it sounds beyond great. I used to have a bootleg shure mic, i got for $45 and it is light years ahead of it in terms of clarity and sound.
