I thought i'd share a picture of a 8 space rack i built out of some scraps i had paying around in the shop. Most of its oak, one side is birch, the top is maple. I had all my stuff sitting on one of my monitors, and it was only a matter of time before it fell off. This is much better, wonder why i didn't make one sooner...

Nice job. They don't make too many racks with mitered corners.

ooooooooo pretty. nice rack, i love wood furniture and everything. looks so much nicer than plastic SKB cases and bland cold metal. it doesn't do anything for the sound, unless of course it is on your walls and floor hahaha. i like it.

Looks nice. I built all my racks. It's the only way to go.

Jason,

What was your total dollar $$$ cost for the rack project?

BTW I love the finished edge. Very nice.

hey guys,
I'm suprised at the response i've gotten ...my construction methods : the sides hare held together with four stretchers 19" wide with pocket holes made with a Kreg Jig. the Oak strips that the electronics attatch to are just glued onto the sides. In a face to face grain situation like that, and modern glues, it's way strong. The front trim is rounded over with a 3/8 roundover bit and then glued on as well. there are holes in the top stretchers that the top is screwed on to. that's it. Pretty simple. I have a small custom woodworking business at my home. I could make these for you guys and finish it light , medium, or dark. Different woods etc. I'd sell these for $35.00 for 8 space, and add $2.00 for each additional 2 spaces. 10 space = $37.00 for example. You pay the shipping. I do take Pay Pal. I think that's a pretty good deal. When finished, they would look great. I use a HVLP sprayer, and either laquer, or a waterbased polyeurothane....I'v been considering doing other custom stuff music related, guitar stands, music stands, etc. But not sure if the market is there. I'm in a small town in Idaho....Maybe you all can help me out and get some nice studio stuff in exchange!
Thanks for the nice words all,
Jason

I'd take one in light oak....but only if you stamp your trademark/name inside of it.

I don't know how shipping would work, but I'd be down. Without a doubt. That's a beautiful rack, and I don't have the tools to do it myself.

PS - I'd be interested in seeing what kind of guitar stand you could put together, too.

Quick questions: Are you screwing the gear in the wood or are you using rails? How much is shipping? Thanx.

Turnip....If you're serious I'll get right on it...I do have some little brass plates with Starbirds' Custom Wood Working on them that I attatch to my peices...Is that close enough? I'll estimate the shipping cost for this 8 space unit, around $20.00 it depends on the weight. That is through the post office. I think UPS may be a little cheaper, I could check into it. I'd love to do them for you guys...

Digital Smith - The units are screwed into the wood. A 1.25 inch piece on solid oak. They won't come loose. I'm estimating the shipping around 20 dollars, i'd have to get one boxed up and weigh it to be sure.

I do take pay pal, you can check my feedback on e-bay username jasonbird100
Money orders, personal checks are fine also. I can probably get one out to you the day after you order it and I receive payment.
I'm working on a web page now...
starbirdscustomwoodworking.com
hopefully it will be up in a week or so....

I'm serious, and that brass plate is perfect. :) If you can get a ballpark from either UPS or Postal (whichever is cheaper), I'll buy one today.

I'm still curious about the stands, too...

ok, I'm on it....my e-mail is jasonstarbird@att.net
e-mail me and give me your zip code, and i'll get back with when i find out. I'm going to build three of them right now. After i get one made, i'll weigh it and then let you know...Cool!! thanks a lot.
Jason

If I weren't out of work, I'd be buying one of your 8 space racks today.

I'm wondering, how much would you charge for the plans to make that rack?

Here's a thought, you might be able to ship much cheaper if you send the finished pieces unassembled (the way prefab furniture comes).

If the shipping is much less than the $20 guestimate that you already stated, I may buy one unemployed or not.

I would also insist that you put one of those ID tags in mine too.

Great job.

Carl

i'm defintely interested in both the rack and a multi-guitar stand

Hi there,
I made three racks today and two of them are sold so far. I figure that the 8 space rack will weigh about 18 pounds in the box. I can ship it priority mail to New Jersey for $19.30 . Parcel post , 4 days, is $14.52 .
Krakit - Dude I feel bad for you, but you gave me an idea. I will ship you all of the peices and instructions on how to put it together for $ 22.00 plus shipping. You will finish it to your own liking. They are pretty easy to put together, all you need is a square, glue, and a square bit screwdriver. Clamps are also helpful. You can have it all together in an hour. Same goes for any body else.
Digital Smith - Yes I can do black , might be a little more because some extra labor, or do the above option and you can finish it yourself. Any one that would like one, e-mail me at JasonStarbird@att.net
Thanks guys....Jason

Jason you can pick up a sheet of 3/4" black melamine for about $25. Great for black studio furniture.

Good point Tex...I use the white stuff all of the time, never thought to get black. Would be nice...

Yo Jason,
you think you could make me a 4 space rack with a front and back enclosure so that I can use for gigging. I think it would look a lot more slick then showing up to a gig with a ugly looking SKB rack.

c7sus, Although I do agree with what your saying 100%, your right, it's none of your business.Let the man do what he wants...............J/K. maybe he just want to help some of us HR's out.
I picked up a brand new 2 space cocobolo filler on ebay yesterday for $9.something. I bought it earlier this month from the same guy and drilled some holes in it to moungt my RNP,RNC and a headphone amplifier. I also put 2 xlr connectors on it that come out of the RNP. It looks a lot better than stacking all that on my desk.
