Actually, three new tricks.
The first one is inserting a compressor before the limiter on the master bus.
Man, this is amazing to me. Now I can get more loudness without the distortion I was getting with only a limiter
Second, I read somewhere about rolling off everything under 40 hz. On my speakersm the resulting sound is more polished.
third, build everything around the vocal. on this track, I put the vocal where I wanted it and then started raising instrument volumes to achieve the balance. I also now use a good amount of eq, regardless of mic.
I also put a healthy amount of reverb on the mix.
