...but, I am quite the virgin to recording and I need some help.

Okay. I picked up an Audiophile 2496 sound card for pretty cheap. I called a local music store, and I was told i needed a mixer/preamp. So I picked up a Alesis MultiMix 8FX for again, pretty cheap.

I have a copy of Cakewalk Sonar 4, might be a bit to complicated for me at this time I think.

So, with a guitar, mic, mixer/preamp and sound card how do I do this? Should I plug straight into the mixer, or mic a guitar amp?

Any comments or links to tutorials would be greatly appriciated.
 
mic a guitar amp is better. plug mic into alesis 3 pin xlr input.
then line out to the audiophile line input.
if you want some free tutorials there are plenty on the net.
or try pgmusic.com in the support section. peace.
also get a book on recording at your library.

Do people generally adjust the EQ on the mixer? Or through an editing software after?

Man...this is too confusing.

If you only using your mixer as a patchbay for your instruments and plan on mixing your tracks internally (in the software), then dont touch the EQ on the mixer. Dont record into the computer using any EQ, effects or even compression, well maybe a little compression to keep the peaks at bay. Once its recorded like that you cant undo it.

Okay. Right now I don't have XLR so I am plugging straight into the mixer.

So from Guitar to mixer to sound card, and with Cool Edit Pro up and running, where do I go from here?

EDIT:

Have mic plugged in the mixer. On Cool Edit, once I press record the tracks on the main screen don't pick up anything, but at the bottom of the screen it is picking up the dB.

Help...me...

Did you route the signal to the track your about to record on? Or better yet is there a button that arms a track to record on?

You should read the manual on recording a track. That will give you more detail on this matter.
 
you bought sonar 4 and now have it sitting on the shelf??? wow. sonar is a wicked program, i would suggest learning to use it, there are tutorials on the cakewalk.com site as well as several books published for beginners. it has superior effects plugins compared to cakewalk in my opinion
