Hi all, the reason I joined was to gain some knowledge and insight on recording. I am a drummer, for fun, and was looking for some answers to a few questions I have. I am currently using a Hart Dynamics electric drum kit with a Roland TD-8 drum module. I am using a Mac mini with Garageband. I am looking to record myself playing along with music, doing covers. I also might want to do a few recordings with another player or two, i.e. guitar/bass player. I am more or less looking for a quick easy setup without a lot of cost$. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks all!

Hi and welcome to the forums,

To do covers, really cool options I like to use are the free midi download websites you can find through Google. That way you can access cool songs and drum along to them after you render the MIDI files.

Assuming you like your drum sounds, you should buy an audio interface, there are lots of great 2inx2out USB boxes out there in the $100 range if you want to record the audio coming from your kit and not use MIDI to trigger computer samples.

As for your software, there are free options like Audacity that are open source basically and would allow you to do rudimentary recording tasks with a collab but there is no MIDI functionality. Otherwise Cubase and Reaper are very popular solutions if you are willing to spend a bit of cash.

Best of luck,
Bane

The Native Instruments Komplete Audio6 Interface could have been made to solve your problem!

The interface has two line inputs that will take the signals from your drums and two very good microphone pre amps for capturing vocals, guitar amps or direct injected electric guitar or bass. Also has MIDI i/0 so you would be able to record the data in any event.

Cherries on the cake are: Cubase LE6, V powerful and the dog's whatsits for MIDI plus a shedload (about 3gigs IIRC) of samples to download.

Dave. (and they STILL haven't sent the cheque Bobbs!)

Thanks for the help/advise. I have a lot of learning to do as I don't know much of anything when it comes to this side of the business. Hell I dont even know how to do garageband.! Thanks again for the help!
