I know I don't post that much on this part of the forum, but I wanted to let everyone know I am getting the Davisound TB10. I heard about through you guys so I thought you would like to know.

My Martin is gonna be sooooooo happy.

Is that with the Fishman Matrix Blender? Staight in, just a bit of compression, since it is a compessor....?

You said it was with a Taylor.......did you mic it? The on board pre amp in the Taylor is by Fishman right?

...and the TB3....isn't that the Mic-All preamp with the Tube compressor?

That guitar did sound amazing though, Recording Engineer. Nice work.

The acoustic guitar (a Taylor) was stereo miked. A Milab VIP-50 in Omni was set about 1.5 ft. from the sound-hole (slightly off-access) and a Studio Project C3 in Omni was set about 3 ft. back pointed at the middle of the neck. They were ran through a DaviSound TB-3 (which has "Mic-All" preamps) with no compression or the tube engaged.

cool cool

I got an AKG C3000B. I am thinking about getting another, but also am looking at the 414.

I'd nudge the 414 up a little higher on my list (ahead of another akg c3000b). You should really look at upgrading your mic collection before you start shelling out that kind of money on mic pres and a/d converters. Just an observation.

I have to agree with chessrock there... Though I think I'd try to upgrade my mic cabinet at the same time as my preamp... What I mean is I'd rather have any of the Studio Projects mics and an excellent preamp than I would an [insert mic up to $1k or so of your choice here] and a poor preamp.

Of course, the current 414s isn't my idea of a quality budget mic either so... Just my opinion. Although, I do have to say I'd be happy with a Jim Williams modded 414 B-ULS! Talk about a no-brainer for a mic under $1k, and far below it at that!!!

Good point, RE. And very true. Wow, we agree on something. :D Plug that in to a JW-moded Symetrix 202 and you have a pretty inexpensive yet dangerous combo.

414 B-ULS....

Thats the $799 one right? Thats what I was looking at.

I know the web site has two models, whats the difference?

Transformer output.

Transformerless output and either has a different transducer (capsule and diaphragm) than the B-ULS or the transducer is the same but the diaphragm has a different tension. Which one it is, I haven't a clue.

Either way, neither is my ideal "budget" mic under $1k or so. But if I bought a slightly used or a brand new B-ULS between $500-$600 or so off eBay or some other place and had Jim Williams mod it, it'd be a VERY respectable mic for under $1k and pretty far under that too!!!

I heard good things about the TLM 103. Its only 7 bills and is supossed to be awsome.

Yo LocusLarsen,
Let me know what you think of your pre when you get it. I'm in the market for a TB-6 and want to know your opinion. They seem like a really good "bang for the buck" pre.

Locus,

Congrats, man.....I have TB-6 that has yet to shake my faith in Davisound gear. I'm a little jealous....I actually wanted the TB10 but needed extra pres right away and didnt have enough for 2 TB10s....no big deal, i guess.....I had 2 instrument pres put in so, in effect, its the same thing. VUs are just so nice to look at!

Whats his turnaround time looking like these days? I swear I want to try that funky mic that Chess calls the "Birdhouse". I guess if it sucks, you have a boutique birdfeeder, huh?

YO RE....didnt you get one of those things? Hows that coming?

What the hell happend to the link in my 3rd reply? Weird!!!

I've had a Gotham matched-pair of 103s with consecutive serial numbers and all the major accessories, all in a Neumann flightcase, since a couple months after they were released.

Like the current 414s, the 103 is something people either like or don't like. Obviously, I fall into the catagory of liking them.

They are my all-around stereo-pair work-horses for stereo miking an acoustic guitar and as drum kit overhead pair. They seem to either work or not work on a vocal (it's very obvious when they do and when they don't), and I can count on them to give me a good track to work with when I need an additional large diaphragm mic to throw-up on something when most of my others are already in use.

Their performance to price ratio almost seems right to me, not quite though, not when you consider others that are out there. Same could be said for the B-ULS. But most of it is STILL due to the simple fact that it has "414" in the model number and the 103 has "Neumann" on it.

Now with all that said, over the next year or two, I'm looking to replace their all-around stereo-pair work-horse job with a matched-pair of small-diaphragm omnis. I still won't sell them though! Okay, so I would if they had held their value MUCH better! But the grey market killed ANY chance of that happening for ALL Neumanns!!!

A matched-pair to be exact! They've been pushed-back on a few occasions with encouragement from myself because they've been doing experiments with "revised" Swedish tranducers of the ones they've previously used and experiments with different housing dimesions and modified techniques to see if that accomodates the new transducers even better.

I don't know the results of the experiments or what has been decided, but Hayne JUST told me now that their first TB-5 is completed and shipped, be prepared for my pair of Telefunken U373a compressor/limiters I'm having them rack to arrive in the coming weeks and my mics hopefully in the coming weeks after that, because a bunch of orders that they've been working-on a little bit at a time as a whole group since starting the TB-5, will now get full-attention individually until completion!

They'll also be moving to the "build-it" portion of my console in the coming weeks too, for the longhaul, now that we've finally completed the "design-it" stage.

Why, you lucky Bastard!

I had to actually go and look into what the TB-5 even is.....very interesting......VERY interesting.

I am really curious as to how the mics perform.....man...let me/us know when you get them!

As far as the console.....I cant even comment......you bad assed lucky sum-a-na-bih..........

Not to rub it in or anything, but since we just finished designing, I'm just dying to share this with someone!!!

It's a custom 24-ch. dual-input inline console, "Mic-All" preamps throughout but a passive hi and low shelf EQ has been incorporated within the Trim amp stage. After the Insert, the 2-band "Q-Bal" EQ used in the TB-4 and a hi-pass filter, all which the Channel Monitor Section can "borrow" it. 4-Buses, two of them with the "MUSI-Q" used in the TB-4 and two of them with the "DaviSirkit" used in the TB-4, but only if there's enough room for the circuitry without signal integrity compromise. Total of 8 Aux Sends. In the Main Channel path, two fixed pre and the rest pre/post switchable in pairs. In the Channel Monitor Section and in the Buses, two fixed pre for Aux 1 & 2 and two fixed post for Aux 3 & 4. Meterbrige will be LED Peak and VU switchable per channel and will also either be -10dBu and +4dBu switchable or fully calibratable, per channel. Mains meters will be LED Peak and VU meter.

And I'll sure let you/ you guys know once the mics arrive!!!
