I've played guitar for years and I'm very interested in home recording (I'm going to transfer to Belmont for Audio Engineering this Fall) but I've always wanted to play drums. I've got a small studio in my basement that I invite a lot of high school bands to come record for cheap, but I don't have a drum kit. I finally broke down and bought myself a kit and some cymbals after a lot of hunting for a good deal. I think I made out ok:

Cymbals: Sabian Paragons
14" Hats
16" Crash
18" Crash
22" Heavy Ride
8" Splash (didn't want it, but he gave it to me)

Price: $350

Story: A guy had bought these and a Gretsch Catalina kit brand new for a recording project. Now he has no use for them. They look brand new, they even have a hardshell carrying case. Considering this would cost $950 on Musicians Friend, I think I got a hell of a deal. He even delievered them to my house.

Drum Set: Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage 6 Piece with hardware
Price: $550

Story: I actually haven't picked this up yet. This guy bought a bunch of drum kits from a music store that went out of business. These things are brand new. I'll probably go up and get it tomorrow or Monday.

I think I did pretty good. If you went to a studio, would this kit be something you'd want to use? I record in my basement, so I don't like people hauling their kits through my house.

If it sounds good, go for it. It is more a matter of what you like. People can tell you all day long what is good or what is not. But at the end of the day, if you are not happy with it, it wouldn't be worth $50 to you.

This is true. The sound of the Paragons always amazed me, but I figured they'd be way out of my price range, so I shocked when I found a full set of them for the price of the hi-hats and a splash. As for the drums, I never thought I'd find a Yamaha kit I'd like, but I was impressed with the Stage Customs. Defiently a step up from the Catalina kits I was looking at. I don't think I got ripped off, I just want to check with people who actually play drums and make sure I got a good deal on good equipment.

Let me put it this way....you have about the same amount in your drums that I have in mine and you got a whole lot more for the money. I am a little jealous. I would have rather had Yamahas but I wanted to support my friend's music store and all they carried at the time was Mapex. My cymbals are all mismatched between cheep stuff and nice stuff. It would be nice to have all the same sound. All in all, I think that you did not get hurt at all.

Hey, if you can set all that up in a way that complements as such, you'll have a nice little setup there. As far as recording drums, smaller sized drums with less "ring" are usually easier to deal with. Although, that's not always the case!

Wow.. Thats all I can say. You did terrific! How did you get those Paragons for so cheap?! And a 6 piece Stage Custom!??! For $550. Man, thats crazy. Im jelous of those prices!

I'd be extremely skeptical in regards to the origin or this kit. those prices are pretty ridiculous and I'd worry that someone got their set jacked. Or that it "fell off a truck". You basically have more than 2 grand worth of drums for less than a grand, even just a guy who bought them from a store thats going out of business could get way more than that on ebay. If he bought so many kits then shoot us his email, i'd like to buy the same set up.

You're a liar

Magnificent! Holy...wow! Man, I'm way too jealous, I don't even want to think about how good of a deal you got. The only conclusion that I could come to is to tell myself that you are lying. Yep...that's it, you're a very creative LIAR.
