howdy folks! i just got a VS 1880 yesterday and i am totally psyched to use it! i'm by no means a recording newbie, but i have tons of questions already! i figure that's part of the reason for having a forum in the first place, right? so, if anyone knows what they're doing and has a few minutes to help out an enthusiastic guy then read on!

my first couple of questions are these:

phantom power -

there is optional phantom power. this much i know. BUT... which inputs have it? do they all or do only 1 & @ (the XLR's) have it? ok, so i assume it's 1 & 2 but what happens if i want to use a combination of condenser AND dynamic mics? is that possible? hmm...

the stereo tracks -

ok so to me having these "stereo tracks" just means that it's an 11-track, not a 16 track after all. i know that's wrong but i don't quite understand the advantages/possibilities of stereo tracks. is it that i can record 2 mics to a stereo track (ie: 7 & 8) and then pan them left and right or something? i'm sure there is a totally good reason why stereo tracks are great. i assume that, to use them effectively that you have to record a stereo source onto them...

geez, if someone can figure out what exactly i'm trying to say in this post i'll be surprised. anyways, hi and nice to meet you all!

The phantom power is indeed for channels 1 & 2 only. You can use condensors and dynamics at the same time, using phantom power. (dynamics donn't really care if you put phantom power on them or not. Really doesn't matter. It does matter for some other mics. But I forgot which... :) )

About the stereo tracks: you can split these (link off), so you'll have 12 mono instead of 6 stereo channels. Which gives you a 18 track recorder... The second channel (nrs 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18) can be accessed by using the shift button...

The use of stereo tracks is, for example, when using stereo micing techniques, but mostly when recording synths or samplers etc with stereo output. This way you can handle both tracks as one stereo track, with one fader, one pan, one eq setting...

Read the manual... You won't get a thing when reading it, boring as hell, but at least you know what it's possibilities are, what you have to look for when searching menus, and where to find it once you grab back to it for reference...

split 'em

hey thanks roel. i figured there was some way to split them up. i definately need to read the owners manual more. i read the user's guide, which gives a good idea of how to get started and is fairly well laid out. the owner's manual seems to be a bit daunting and i just want to record, but i know i've gotta read it.

so if you're recording and you deceide you want to record a track with a condenser you have to save your work, shut off the machine, turn on the "phanton power" switch and then turn the machine back on? that would make sense i guess... thanks for the tips!

You may want to join vsplanet.com if you haven't already. I monitor both forums and the planet has more activity.

Hey AnimalTown, I just bought an 1880 on the 14th!I am loving it. I have gotten a lot out of the video that came with it.She walks you thru the demo songs and features and using the effects (if you got the fx cards) it is still kind of like a science project to me but i'm getting there. If you have any revalations or questions you can give me a private message or e-mail at vulcanofga@aol.com enjoy your unit.
