I hear only the sound of the right or left side, but I record in stereo

Hello everyone!

I have the following problem:
I use an equipment for home recording in the following order:

1. Rode NTK Condenser Mic,
2. Power supply (Rode NTK)
3. M-audio dmp3 preamp,
4. M audio firewire 410 – audio interface
5. PC - Cubase 5
6. Marantz PM 66 se K.I.amplifier
7. Dali Ikon2 speakers, Sennheiser DN555 headphones.

The problem is that when I record vocals in Cubase program as well as in the other programs Live, Sonar, etc. I hear only the sound of the right or left side, but I record in stereo.
I think I should hear sound from both sides.
What am I doing wrong?
How can fix it?

I am also pleased with the sound quality of recording vocals, although I think that the rode NTK microphone is not so bad. Many people have cheaper microphone, but a result of better sound.

You need to set your DAW to record in mono. Since you only have one microphone, it only occupies one channel (the left or the right) and nothing gets recorded in the other channel. If you record in mono you will only be recording one channel so the input can be panned center rather than to just one side.

Well I don't think your "bad" quality is a result of your gear, as I can see you have some pretty nice stuff. It might just be technique or how you are producing the tracks. Can you post a sample of what you think is bad quality and we can give you tips and suggestions on how to improve it?

thanks for your explanation.
Well I have recorded in mono mode so far, but I thought it should be stereo.
I was a little confused about it. OK now I ll try do it mono and stereo, casuse I have 2 mics and I ll see how it works.
 
If you only use one mic on a take, you might as well record in mono. Recording it in stereo just takes up twice as much space, and everything you could do to a stereo track can be done to a mono track too.

If you really need stereo, here's the fix: record it in mono. Clone the track. Pan one hard left and the other hard right. :D
