Hi there

Newbie question again, i was classically trained as a singer for many years, my voice and range is pretty good, however it sounds too clean and clinical for alot of appliations.

i would love to be able to pull of some of the more heavy metal/linkin park/guns n roses type screaming sounds and get some character/normality in my voice.

can any one suggest anything - i can do an inward scream (getting better) but when i get to try the outward one it just doesnt sound/feel right (and is not loud enough).

Thanks

Have you ever heard someone on the crack pipe? Well don't do that!
The singer for Journey had the same problem and he said he practiced for ever, even screamed into he pillow till he has horse.
But when it came down to it he was original, and what did they make? millions and millions of dollars based on his sweet voice.

Be careful what you wish for, you wish might come true...

Before you choose your wish, son, you better think first.
With every wish, there comes a curse.

Many thanks for those comments guys, its so hard trying to replicate artists that you idealize then cant get it............. having said that a clean version of linkin park's - Given up doesnt sound nasty enough LOL may have to record it and post it n see what people think, then have it next to Nessun dorma just for comedy

Maybe you are aiming at the wrong target. Nothing wrong with wanting to sing popular music, but the ladies are just STUPID for Michael Buble, as an example. His sthitck does nothing for me, but chances are you are not interested in getting into MY pants...:D

Oh you want to record covers. I thought you were going the original route.

Then there is nothing wrong with using the crack pipe ...... just kidding ..... what you can do is incorporate some type of stomp box like a guitar distortion unit and the likes. You should be able to find something out there or someone may chime in with what works for them regarding a stomp box with a similar problem. There are rack mount units but they cost a bundle or may just some simple plug in.

I have thought about the effects route, but i am a bit of a perfectionist and if i cant do the right thing myself then i dont want to cheat....

covers are the best thing for me for now i have thought about doing my own thing but everytime i write a song it never sounds as good as the covers (perfectionist again)

ill stick to the high powerfull rock songs ............. go Steel Heart :D

I don't like the harsh sound I hear a lot today. A guy who can sing like Freddy Mercury or Steve Perry for rock to me has the perfect voice for that genre. For jazz/pop? Gotta go with ol' Blue Eyes.

Writing your own stuff? Maybe a collaboration is in order for you then. You write what you're good at, and someone else writes what they're good at. Not everyone is a Cole Porter. Most songs are collaborations.

Listen to "Bewitched" by Candlemass for a great example of clean vocals being heavy.

interesting - as you age so will that cleaness in your voice - odd question though

I find that drinking a pint or so of a sugary drink always helps roughen up my voice (it makes more phlegm...yay lol). You can't really change your voice characteristics that much, so you'll only be able to do little things like that.

Or you could smoke about 20 packs a day. I think that'd do the trick. Then you'd sound like Chad Kroeger :laughings:

After ALOT oh years covering vocals I wish I hadn't beat MY voice to $#!*. Now I'm recording and doing the "Remember when I could hit that note" Power and clarity will shine over Scream in in the long haul. If I had just said no I can't cover that. New strings are easy new vocal cords not so much. Just sayin is all.

Yes. Contact Robert Lunte (just google him) , buy his program and take lessons with him. You can do it over Skype. It works, and it f works faster than you think. I'm happen to be a client, but I have no reason to promote this him, other than that it works.

Alternatively, you can contact Kevin Richards and buy his "Breaking the Chains" program (again, google him). Unfortunately he doesn't do Skype lessons, but if you are in New York, you can take lessons personally. He also does weekend intensives.

Both Robert and Kevin are great teachers, and while their programs are a little different (I own both), they have a lot of respect for each other. I chose to work with Robert because of his Skype lessons, not because I thought his program was necessary better.
