I have a question about Recording Snakes

I've bought several recording snakes, and personally the Hosa ones I got I think they suck, they have a very thin cabling, and it's already got shorts in it, what a useless life-time guarente
if the product is poorly made in the first place, Does any one know a good brand of Recording snakes? I'm using 1/4" to 1/4"
I'm tempted to just use some thicker guitar cables to hook my Mixer and Layla together is that a bad idea?

Why would I need stereo cables?

Unbalanced = Mono
Balanced = Stereo

Hosa is a decent brand, avail anywhere. You can make your own snakes with canaire cable, if you can solder. Star-Quad cable is even better. Whip out some cash though

Balanced cables improve sound quality quite a bit, significantly reduce noise, if and only if your synths/mics/ etc support it. Mics usually do, but synths more often than not, don't support balanced or TRS cabling.

Hosa is just as bad as Radio Shack, They both are very prone to short out. I'd like to know about this building my own stuff, how much would that cost?

I have a slew of hosa snakes and not one, (yes, I said not one) suddenly became defective. Keep in mind my cables usually sit in the floor, or up the side of a rack, and don't move much. I'm sure that makes a huge difference compared to live gig setups.
