I am running Cakewalk Home Studio. I think it's Version 2.0, but It's @ home, while I am @ work, thus I can't check to be exactly sure. I was wondering which version it is similar to. I have seen Pro 8 used, and it seems similar. But until sonar, they were all in the same vein. I am considering upgrading to a full version with pro tools and all the extras, but I don't know which would be best for a celeron 700mhz, 416 ram, 30 gig 7200 Western Dig hardrive, Win98se, I also have the core 2 lexicon patchbay and soundcard. With a mackie 1402 mixer, and a few sm 57's and 58's available. I don't know what other pieces i might need, aside from monitors. Any help would be nice.. But what I'm truly lookin for is software advice.

I am running Sonar on a 700 Mhz PIII, 20 Gb 7200 RPM HDD, with 512Mb memory. The memory was recently upgraded from 256. I am running it with MME drivers for my soundcard, since I do strictly audio (no midi) and do not use Live Input monitoring - so latency is not really an issue for me.

The system runs with very little problems (and did even before the memory upgrade). I do get an occasional dropout with a lot of FX running (particularly Waves reverb). Most of my projects run 12 tracks or so.

I would suggest either Sonar or PA9 for your system. Pro Audio 9 would probably run a little better, as it's less resource intensive - and it is a very nice program (and cheaper than Sonar); however I expect you will not have the same computer forever, and Sonar might be a better investment for the future. Either program should be a nice step up from Home Studio.
