How i would spend 2k
[added this line halfway through my post] $2000 is not enough money!
First of all, when starting out I dont subsribe to the notion of buying "beginner gear." I would suggest buying quality stuff you wont need to replace later, only add to. I began in a similar fashion, only I had a slightly larger budget. Here is my suggestion:
$600 fast computer w/ at least 512MB RAM (refurbished ones are a great deal!) check out uBid.com!
$200 M Audio Delta 1010 (sure you could skimp and get the Audiophile 2496 (as I did), but you'd be stuck if you ever wanted to use hardware effects with your setup down the road)
$400 Reason 3.0 (for beats)
$150 Mackie Tracktion 2 (for recording)
$300 -- whatever mic in this range fits your voice
$300 Mackie 1202 VLZ mixer (nice preamps -- this was 400 when i got it

)
$200 decent cables, mic stand, and pop filter
$50 headphones (indispensable!)
$100 Gotta have a MIDI controller for composing! M Audio keystation 49 would do...
I monitor with my home stereo...but i was lucky enough to have a GOOD one (IMO) In any event, i am not well enough informed on studio monitors to make a suggestion.
And the grand total (minus the monitors of course) is $2300
Hope this helps.
