:D Yo Ashley:

Basically, you need a recorder and a drum box.

Check out the digital 8 trackers. Tascam makes a couple of lower priced units, as well as Boss.

Be sure you are aware of how MANY TRACKS YOU CAN RECORD AT ONCE. There are units that ONLY record two tracks at once, some do 4 tracks at once, and some do 8 tracks. Doing 8 tracks is something I rarely do but it is possible if overdubbing.

I suggest the Boss 880 drum machine--great patches and it has excellent sound and features. Check it out.

So, as I figure it out in cash output, you will be below 2k and have money left over for a decent mic and, perhaps a mic preamp of moderate cost.

Suggest the RNC mic pre which runs pretty much @175 pezzutos.

Have fun and happy hollidays.

How i would spend 2k

[added this line halfway through my post] $2000 is not enough money!

First of all, when starting out I dont subsribe to the notion of buying "beginner gear." I would suggest buying quality stuff you wont need to replace later, only add to. I began in a similar fashion, only I had a slightly larger budget. Here is my suggestion:

$600 fast computer w/ at least 512MB RAM (refurbished ones are a great deal!) check out uBid.com!
$200 M Audio Delta 1010 (sure you could skimp and get the Audiophile 2496 (as I did), but you'd be stuck if you ever wanted to use hardware effects with your setup down the road)
$400 Reason 3.0 (for beats)
$150 Mackie Tracktion 2 (for recording)
$300 -- whatever mic in this range fits your voice
$300 Mackie 1202 VLZ mixer (nice preamps -- this was 400 when i got it :( )
$200 decent cables, mic stand, and pop filter
$50 headphones (indispensable!)
$100 Gotta have a MIDI controller for composing! M Audio keystation 49 would do...

I monitor with my home stereo...but i was lucky enough to have a GOOD one (IMO) In any event, i am not well enough informed on studio monitors to make a suggestion.

And the grand total (minus the monitors of course) is $2300

Hope this helps.

Yo Krunk:

He/she just wants to make some tracks. So, I'm suggesting the lower but still good quality gear.

However, I did omit the need for monitors, cans, mic, and a mic pre; some Boss venders sell an entire beginners' digital recording package for around 600, thus leaving enough of the 2k for passive monitors and a mic, some cables, etc.

Going to the PC would envolve a whole lot more coin and, perhaps, many more complications. Start small and build would work. I started with a Yam 4 track tape recorder. Still work with a SIAB; the PC stuff has too many menus.

But, to each his/her own.

I see what you are saying, but down the line an all-hardware setup would cost a ton more. With that in mind, a person might eventually switch to a computer setup and then be stuck with a 8 track recorder and other obsolete stuff that they spent a lot of good money on and wont use anymore, when they coulda just started the whole process differently. I dont mean to start a hardware vs software debate, but if your budget is only 2 grand then hardware will not take you that far. After getting the bare minimal basics you wont even have enough left over for any decent signal processors. To be perfectly honest, I cant see how someone with a low budget could even consider hardware.
