I Have 2 Choices

Im on my way to to big boy land. I narrowed my choice to either a great river mp-1nv or the focusrite isa 220 session pack. I mostly at the moment recording pop and r&b music. Im looking for the nice warm sound in the vocals(and cant hurt on my bass and drums either). Right now I use the pres on my soundcraft spirit studio board(A little on the thin side not as upfront). Any opinions are appreciated. Thx.
 
my opinion

know nothing about focusrite. but everyone loves the great rivers and the john hardys. but pause a minute. maybe you should before making a final decision audition a rane ms1 and see if that
getsyou going well. both chessrock and i , and thousands of others including lots of sound caontractors i'm sure think they are VERY GOOD preamps. apparently you can find them around the net for 150 bucks.
 
What mic will you be running into the preamp? This will make a big difference in picking the pre.

Then I would say get yourself a really nice mic. The word "warm" can mean a lot of different things to different people, so that's kind of a vague description.

But then you mentioned R&B, and my initial thought is that you're probably looking for a flattering Large-diaphragm vocal condenser. And I'd say get the best you can afford. B.L.U.E. and Soundeluxe are about the best "Pop/R&B music" type mics that would be in that general $1K or so range. If you gotta' go in the next lower bracket, then have a look at the Rode NTK.
 
Right now I have a studio projects C1 which works perfect with the artists im working with but I know I hear A difference in quality when its ran through different mic pres. Ex. I had a artist sing through a behringer mixer and then through a focusrite plat strip the focus sounder fuller and fit right in the mix with no eq probs.The behringer sucks I got rid of that then picked up the soundcraft and i hear a definite diff in quality from that. The great river is my first choice based on the rave reviews its gotten from here and other sites. That how i got my c1 and I love it. The focusrite isa was and after thought after i have seen it in various studios and thought maybe it was as good or better than the great river but dont want to spend the extra $400-600 more for something as good or worse . Another reason I wanted the great river was beacause it emulates the neve that dr dre uses and i like that sound. PLease help me make the right decision.

There's a much bigger difference between, say, a Behringer mixer and a focusrite . . . than there will be between a Focusrite and a Great River. You're talking about a mixer that's basically just a big pile of crap with knobs and faders. Anything that even passes sound is likely to be a major step up.

A mic pre is not going to give you a "sound" that another producer who uses it gets. Not even remotely. His sound is a combination of factors, of which the mic pre probably plays an extremely miniscule role. Especially when you consider the fact that rap artists use mostly electronic instruments and samples . . . and when they do mic things you will not find Dr. Dre using any Studio Projects C1 mics. I can tell you that with much confidence. :D
 
. . . not that it matters, but isn't Dr. Dre a big SSL fan?
