ok, I have a sweet mix going with the instruments, I go to record the vocals, they are nasally and sound like shit. I solo the vocals by themselves, they sound great. the problem is the mix. what can I do to maintain a natural sound while making sure the vocals can be heard, without being too harsh. =(

Are you using any compression on the vocs? More often than not, they need it to sit in the mix. Post a clip........

With your vocals, and the music I have heard from you, I'd say you need to carve some space with some eq. Don't ask me how, as I am sucky at this, but I will bet it's a matter of your music stepping on the vocals. If you like the vocals solo, try a simple mix of the music in stereo, and putting the vocals with it, then seeing if just cutting some Freq's out of the music seems to help. It might give you an idea of what is conflicting. If it doesn't help, at least you rule out too much similar sounds...

the thing is I'm using compression and you're right about my voice dogman, but I especially prepared and there was a definite space left in the center and with the EQ for my vocals, but still... I don't know, maybe I'm like a perfectionist and I just can't get the perfect take I want. it's just frustrating. I also don't like recording (at least by myself)... I just want to play the music.

I'm such an idiot. I just turned down the main and upped my vocal and added some reverb in my head phones. I'm singing much better and it sounds much better, but it's still a bit burried.

Post it dude...maybe it's just you being too critical....i mean, you need to be happy, but let us chime in. :D

Have you tried...

grn,

Try mixing and EQ-ing in mono.

This suggestion piggybacks off Dogman's advice. If you can get everything to find its own space in mono it usually sounds great in stereo.

Search for forum member "pipelineaudio".....a post within the last week or so, I think the title might have been "mono panning". The technique works and will really help every part shine through the mix. One of the best suggestions I've implemented on here.

Good music to you.

I still really struggle with this too. Like, my tunes sound great and the vocal ends up sounding like karaoke over a backing track. (Ok maybe my tunes don't quite sound 'great')

I feel your pain dude.
